Update: Ward Parkway Shopping Center shooting

The day after the shootings at Ward Parkway Shopping Center and the story is starting to unfold, although not everything has been confirmed officially. Apparently this all started when police went to make a welfare check on an elderly woman who had not been heard from. They found Patricia Ann Reed dead and her car missing. Then a police officer spotted her vehicle and pulled it over. As the officer tried to arrest the driver, he started shooting and shot the police officer in the arm and left. Then the suspect, now known as David W. Logsdon, 51, went to the Ward Parkway Shopping Center and started shooting. He killed 2 people in the parking lot, Leslie N. Ballew, 33, and Luke A. Nilges, 30. He then went into the mall and kept shooting. He wounded at least 2 people. Police arrived at the mall and confronted David, and during that confrontation, shot and killed him. It is discovered that David was a security guard at the Target store in the mall.

Today the police went to David’s home along with the Bomb and Arson squad. A police officer who went to the house earlier saw something suspicious inside while looking in the window. After sending in a robot, it was a confirmed:

“We found that the house had been booby trapped with a bomb, a self-made bomb,” Police Chief James Corwin said at a Monday afternoon news conference.“David Logsdon had a plan. That plan was he had been an employee of the Target store. He had been turned down on a private security license for outstanding warrants. It’s our speculation at this particular time in the investigation that he had two handguns, a long rifle, and his objective was to go to the mall and cause havoc,” Police Chief James Corwin said

The mall was still closed today (of course) but according to the owners, it will reopen tomorrow.

So far I have not found pictures of the victims or anything about them yet. Except for a blog entry from a family member of Luke Nilges zombie’s Blog. Please keep all of the victims and their families in your thoughts and in your heart.

Breaking News: Multiple Shootings at Ward Parkway Shopping Center 4/29/2007 Kansas City, MO

There was a shooting at the Ward Parkway Shopping Center today in Kansas City, Missouri. Reports say that two or three are dead, one reports says that includes the shooter. Several others are wounded, at least one is in critical condition. There was also incident actually started at a traffic stop on Bannister Rd. where the suspect open fire on the police officer, who was shot in the arm. Then a shooterwent to the Ward Parkway Shopping Center, entering Target and just opened fire. It is believed that he used an AK-47 or a rifle. Right now details for both shootings are very sketchy and seems to be a bit conflicting, as to whether it is one incident or two. However, they may not know yet. I will update as soon as I get better information.

MSNBC is now reporting that 4 people are dead, including the gunman, whose body is still inside the mall. His identity and the other victims have not yet been released. One person was killed in a house (that I could not find any details on) and 2 others in the mall.

Update: Quinton and Marquise Jackson murders *Brian Gilbert convicted, sentenced to LWOP*

Brian Gilbert will be in court today to face a Judge on the murder charges for killing Quinton and Marquise Jackson and the rape of their sister. It should be a short hearing, just to read the charges and say NO BAIL. At least I believe that is what will happen.

Brian Gilbert went to court and was ordered held without bond. No surprise there. Now, Deputy Police Chief Michael Shields , Gilbert went to the residence to return a cell phone.

Deputy Police Chief Michael Shields said Friday morning that Gilbert had returned to the mother’s home to return a cell phone, when he decided to discipline the boys about cleaning up and he became angry and struck Quinton with a barbell.After that, he stabbed both Quinton and Marquis, and also stabbed the 13-year-old female relative and sexually assaulted her, before leaving her for dead, Shields alleged.“He thought the girl was dead, so when he realizes that she wasn’t is about the time she’s breaking away from the house, and at the same time, simultaneously, from her leaving the house is when the mother is arriving,” Shields said. “The mother doesn’t realize what’s going on but this all happening simultaneously.”

There was also a press conference today concerning the case. According to Police Chief Michael Shields, Gilbert was convicted in 1998 of predatory sexual assault. Also, the mother, Quince Jackson and Brian Gilbert had only recently started dating (something like 3 weeks). He came to the home sometime between 7pm and midnight. The exact time is not known. The children allowed him in as he was not a stranger to them. At some point, Gilbert decided that he could discipline the children over not doing their chores. This escalated to where he hit Quinton (the oldest) with a barbell. He then stabbed Marquis. The sister jumped in to help her brothers and was stabbed and then sexually assaulted. This story is quite different than the story that was told by other witnesses and family friends yesterday. I don’t believe anyone deliberately said the wrong thing or it was reported wrong. It was just a highly emotional time and people were freaked out a bit.

Gilbert’s lawyer answered a few questions today, but nothing of real substance. She kept saying that this was an “emotionally charged” situation and that was a concern to them. She also admitted that the State could go for the ultimate punishment, the death penalty. Which I believe that they will and should. I cannot even begin to understand what Quince Jackson is going thru at this time, one daughter in the hospital and her boys dead, and knowing that her boyfriend did it. For her and her daughter, I hope that justice is served and he is executed, quickly–not twenty years from now.

Update: Marquise and Quinton Jackson murders *Mother’s boyfriend, Brian Gilbert, charged with their murders*

The names of the victims in the stabbing deaths at a South Side Chicago home early this morning have been released: Marquise Jackson, 12, and Quinton Jackson, 14. The sister’s name is not being released as she is a victim of a sexual assault. Reports have also stated that she was also stabbed. She is still listed in stable condition and will be okay. The suspect, Brian Gilbert, has been charged with 2 counts of first degree murder, 1 count of attempted first degree murder, and aggravated criminal sexual assault. Gilbert was a registered sex offender.

A family friend has stated that the children’s mother had broken up with Gilbert about 2 months ago after her daughter told her that he tried to molest her. There has been alot of problems between them ever since.

NBC5 spoke with a man who said he was a friend of the family’s. He said that the mother’s former live-in boyfriend no longer lived in the home, and that there was bad blood between the man and the mother. “She wasn’t in love with him no more,” said one man. “He had tried to molest her daughter a few months ago.”

These murders have devasted a family, a community and the school that the children attended. It was senseless and uncalled for. There is no reason to maliciously murder children. NO REASON.
