Today marks one year since Teresa Halbach was murdered. She was reported missing 3 days after she did not return from a photography shoot she had at Avery Auto Salvage, which she had been to several times to photograph cars for an Auto Trader publication. Her mother reported her missing after Teresa did not contact her family for several days, which was out of character for her. Search parties started to retrace her steps and the surrounding areas. A group of searchers went to Avery Auto Salvage and got permission to look for her car. It was found on the property, partially hidden. This led to investigators obtaining a search warrant to search the property, including Steven Avery’s mobile home, which turned up many items of interest, including what appeared to be blood, guns and a key that fit Teresa’s car. Also found was burned clothing and bone fragments, later determined to be from an adult female. Inside the car would find to be DNA from Teresa Halbach and Steven Avery. Steven Avery was no stranger to crime. He had been in an out of prison most of his adult life. However, he had recently been released from prison, after being falsely convicted of rape, having been helped by the famed “Innocence Project”. He told police that she came and photographed the car and left. Evidence, however, shows otherwise. He was soon arrested for having the guns (felon in possession of a gun is a no-no). He swore to anyone and everyone that he was innocent and that he was being framed, since he was suing for his wrong conviction. The FBI found that the bone fragments found in the fire pit did indeed belong to Teresa Halbach and Avery has been charged, along with his nephew Brendan Dassey – who confessed to the abduction, sexual assault and murder of Teresa, along with Steven Avery. Avery’s trial begins Feb. 5, 2007.
