Anthony ‘Tony’ French gets 80 years in wife’s killing
MUNCIE — Anthony W. “Tony” French had nothing to say Monday before being sentenced to 80 years in prison for arranging the murder of his estranged wife more than 15 years ago.
“The case was solely motivated by greed and control,” Judge Robert Barnet Jr. told French, who was found guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder by a Delaware Circuit Court 3 jury on Nov. 21.
Authorities allege French paid co-defendant Jess David Woods — whose trial is set for Feb. 18 — $5,000 to kill 29-year-old Teresa French, who was pursuing a divorce at the time she was shot to death in the family’s West Cromer Avenue home on May 13, 1993.
In imposing a 50-year sentence for the murder conviction and 30 years for the conspiracy count, Barnet noted French was on probation for battering his wife at the time of her death.
A crowded courtroom — including Anthony French’s relatives and the victim’s family and friends — braved bitter cold to listen to nearly an hour of testimony.
Some witnesses described the 47-year-old defendant as a loving and caring father, while others recalled a greedy and controlling spouse bent on killing his estranged wife to keep his home, his boat and his children.
Deputy Prosecutor Eric Hoffman referred to the slaying as a “classic worst case scenario of domestic violence,” and said French benefited from the slaying by keeping his possessions and his children.
Members of French’s family, including his three children, all testified on his behalf, shedding tears while insisting their father had nothing to do with their mother’s killing.
“I know in my heart that he had nothing to do with this,” said daughter Audrea, 21.
Brock, French’s youngest son, now a high school senior, added, “I know he would not do that. I would put my life on it.”
The oldest son, Kent, 29, told Barnet, “It has been a rough year. Not only have we lost out mom, we are going to lose our dad.”
The children asked that their father be imprisoned in a facility close to Muncie. Barnet said he would recommend a nearby commitment to state Department of Correction officials, who make the final decision on inmate placement.
The defendant’s brother, Jerry French, described the defendant as a “loving and caring” person who had struck his wife only once. He also asked that his brother be placed on home detention.
Jennifer Nye, Teresa French’s sister, said the victim had lived in fear of her life after being battered by Anthony French a few months before her slaying.
“For what he did to her, (French) should see the maximum allowed by law,” Nye said.
Nye said she never told French’s children she thought their father had killed her sister, but was prevented by French, and his family, from seeing her sister’s children for 13 years.
“He did not pay for (Teresa’s) funeral,” Nye said.
Nye said her former brother-in-law was very controlling and frequently threatened Teresa while divorce proceedings were under way.
A probation officer recommended a combined 80-year sentence for French, while prosecutors asked for a 90-year prison term.
Barnet called the killing “heinous” and noted French had violated probation for the 1993 battery conviction, along with the trust of his family.
French, who declined the opportunity to speak before being sentenced, did ask for appointment of a public defender to help him pursue an appeal.

He did it and Kent knows he did. He threatened her all of the time when she asked for a divorce. He hit her so hard he broke her eyebone under her eye. Kent is probly afraid of him.When she died her kids were very small and Brock was just two or three. It took them long enough to aresset him. It finally caught up with him. Finally her family has a piece of mind they new all along that he did it. And to beat all he sued the city for keeping his kids from him and won. So he got insurance money for her death and money from the city and all of the stuff he was afraid if losing the boat one of the two houses he owned all of the cars and trucks he owned and the kids. But finnaly he is paying his dues now. And will pay them again on judgement day.But he will already have a taste of hell before he gets there.

I was too small to remember this.
So reading it, is perhaps less difficult. To me, it almost isn’t real. That I had another member of my family, and I never met her, is strange. It is, a very surreal feeling. I’m not going to debate whether or not he did it. That isn’t my purpose here. My purpose is to remind you.
That someone, who I could have loved with my kin, is now gone.
She isn’t coming back.
She missed meeting me, as I am now, and my cousins, my nephews…
So what do I say about this man, of who I have been told by my family?
It isn’t my place, I didn’t know him. I was too young. Yet still I think, that this entire thing, is so incredibly foul.

my mother, lora, was her best friend sence she was 15 and teresa was 12. i still find teresa’s death clippings from newspapers around the house in random places. and pictures, which my mother kept by her bed. I was just a little girl when teresa was killed, but she baby sat my sister, who is now 27, and I. she was a wonderful woman, and by god i hope she rests in peace. as for tony, i didn’t know the man well, like i said, I was a little girl, but from the things my mother wrote about him in her diary, i don’t beleive he was a good man, as my mother called him, a yellow belly.
