I am interested in historical true crime stories and was drawn to this blog because of the LaBianca/Tate murders of the Helter Skelter age–a very disturbing story in and of itself. I am interested in how these crimes impact people and communities in which they occur. About 50 some odd years prior, another very grisly mass murder took place in a small town in the heart of the Midwest. I recently discovered it after watching a documentary on the topic last night. It was quite compelling. The documentary is called “Villisca: Living with a Mystery” and features FBI Profiler Robert Ressler, the author of “Whoever Fights Monsters”. This little-known murder case known as the Villisca axe murders happened about 20 years after the Lizzie Borden case, but is just as mesmerizing, if not more so. Six children and two adults were murdered with an axe in their beds in the confines of a small 1 1/2 story home, and nobody heard a thing. The trials that followed were sensational, and the film excellently explores the impact of the murders on the community. What can be learned from this historic crimes? I think more than we realize.
