She said she hid her pregnancy from her family so they would not be mad at her. However, I have to wonder now, are they proud of what she did instead?

Good point. Does her family think better of her for killing a newborn than getting pregnant? I do understand family can exact huge emotional punishment for violating moral boundaries. But, murdering the most innocent and defenseless person is not justifiable.
