2008 May: Women on Death Row

This month I will be looking at the women on death row. Some are very high profile, where others may not be. But it is a fact that not as many women are sentenced to death as men. Currently there are approximately 51 women on death row, about 2% of the death row population.

  1. I have been fascinated by the case of Darlie Routier since the murders took place. She and her family keep saying that they have information that will clear her but they haven’t made any efforts that I am aware of to get this information out, at least not to the public. After reading two books on the subject and newspaper reports from the Dallas Morning News I have a difficult time believing that anyone else, aside from her husband, had anything to do with the murders. I’ll be interested to see how this turns out.

  2. Having watched numerous documentaries about the Routier case i am more and more inclined to believe that she did not act alone and i can’t figure out why her husband did not hear the child who was allegedly standing up and whose presence alerted his mom to the incident, there is a lot of discreancies in Darlies statements and as for her spraying silly string on the boys graves that to me was not nor should not have been the act of a greif stricken mother, i know as i lost a child just after birth and i was unable to leave my home for at least 18 months and there is no way i could have partied on his grave as she did………..C’mon Darlie tell the truth and most important of all tell WHY !!!!

  3. I will tell you why. She is a cold-heartless whore who was in debt and needed the insurance money to get out of debt.. Stupid whore needs to never, never get out of prison and like you I am not sure she acted alone but not sure that he husband helped her.. That part I don’t understand

yes, you can write to death row inmates – unless they are on mail restriction. many of them, particularly the most notorious ones, get 100’s of letters a week.
if you were planning to write to darlie routier — she will not respond, as her case is still pending appeal. her atty’s have instructed her not to. this is the case with MANY condemned inmates.
best of luck – and be careful!

  7. There is nothing solid to say she did and nothing solid to say she didn’t. Only a jury of idiots could have determined, BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT, that this woman did this crime based on what the prosecution presented. Furthermore, if you are condemning her based on only PART of a video that celebrated the boy’s life, then hopefully you are never chosen to be on a jury of one’s peers. Convictions should not be based on opinions but on CORROBORATED AND SUBSTANTIATED EVIDENCE. She deserves the chance she has been given to prove her contention that these murders were committed by an intruder.

  10. Miss G,
I have read alot about this case. When I first saw the photos of Darlie’s “defense wounds” that were not allowed at trial, I had doubts. Then my common sense kicked in. Those little boys died a brutal, horrible death. Why would someone from the OUTSIDE come in the home and brutally murder 2 children with their mom nearby, but she lives??? Meanwhile, punk ass dad is upstairs with the only child who couldn’t talk??? I’m not buying it. The bitch is guilty, and she’s where she needs to be.

  12. I am a friend of Darlie. I KNOW in my heart she would never hurt her boys. She loves them and is still hurting over this. If you read the facts…ALL the facts, you will see many holes in the case. I have disected every shred of evidence and forensic files. She and I write eachother at least once a week. She will not respond to those she does not know but appreciates support letters.
To Tracey Grobler: I can direct you to several female death row inmates that could use the support. There are several pen pal programs that I know of. It takes a very kind heart to see past what these ladies are serving time for. Most are 100% guilty but there are a few…very few that deserve a second chance.

So tell me if a Latin woman has a child by a white man does that make the child white?

  20. Now to the subject here,
for a woman to be on death row her crime has to be over the top heinous, men get the death sentence for basically premeditated murder, or all of the other murder types that legally fit the death sentence.
However with women it has to be something like the Arizona case of Debra Milke, she and her boyfriend decided her son’s life was worth a $1,000 life insurance policy. So, right before Christmas they told the boy he was going to see Santa Claus at the mall, instead he was killed. Later the boyfriend reported the boy missing saying he had disappeared at the mall.
This woman got the death sentence because of public opinion, Arizona has many women murders but, because their killing was not so heinous they were not given the death penalty.
I am in hopes that soon equality will reach into the court system and more vile human beings will be judged by their actions and given the penalty they truly deserve.

  21. I have read all of the info on these women prior to
reading your comments. The only one who I really
believe is innocent is “Debra Milke”. I could not see where
they had evidence on her but it seems her own father
had bad things to say. She used poor judgment in letting
that scum take that little boy to the mall (I may not be
100% right about this) but my heart tells me that girl did
not have anything to do with killing that little guy.

  24. i have no problem with an eye for an eye. i have a serious problem with the justice system that allows attorneys to manipulate that system to allow some to get away with murder while others must pay with their lives. as long as this is the case, i believe that no one should be put to death for any reason. stop already with all this mitigation. there are only two ways to kill someone. intentionally and accidental. stop already with the capital murder, first degree murder, second degree murder, voluntary and involuntary manslaughter. if you meant to kill someone and you did, your forfeit your own life. if that can’t be done then knock off this lunacy called the death penalty. this is just so much attorney bullshit. 25. I’m not an inhumane person. I’d like to start off by saying that.
I believe we each have the right to live life to the fullest potential and find our own happiness.
However, when we reserve the right to take a life out of hate or anger we resign the rights to our life. Therefore I believe in the death penalty. If any person is found guilty beyond any shadow of doubt of first degree murder, has made the choice to resign their life, and deserves to be on death row. The problem I have with this is the prison system in our country is overflowing, costing tax payers millions of dollars a year to house and care for death row inmates. most of which will spend the better part of the next 30 years living life without ever having to worry again about paying bills, making rent or the mortgage. They will never go hungry. Medical benefits, dental, optometrists, heart or cancer you name it. A death row inmate can continue their education, earn a degree. Get married, get divorced. Even though legal fees for inmates are minimal, guess who’s paying the difference?
Can anyone tell me why hard working, tax paying citizens are left hungry and homeless in this country? Foreclosures, they didn’t make enough money to pay their mortgage. They lose their home. Yet they made enough to pay taxes so that a death row inmate can have clean sheets on the bed under the roof over their head, text books and teachers for classes towards degrees in a field they will never occupy. I bet this inmate will have dinner tonight. Will your children? Will you?
If we aren’t feeling well and something isn’t right, we need to see a doctor. We need to maintain health in order to be able to support our families. Do you have insurance? Do you have the co-payment covered? Can you afford the many bills that come with DR.’s visits? And if you have to go to the ER, you get billed from each department that services to you. A death row inmate doesn’t need benefits. Their DR’s visit may only cost them $30 Or $40 but the state pays the differential to the DR himself. And who funds the state for them to be able to do this?
Granted, for education, most materials are donated independently or by foundations. However, these foundations for the most part, are supported by, once again, you. The tax payer. As well as the wages paid to the people that teach and tutor inmates.
Now let me make something clear here. I am not suggesting we cut these programs. Inmates that are not on death row deserve the right to do something to better themselves during the time they give for their crimes. They should have the opportunity to grow and learn. And when their time is up and we welcome them back into the free world they have developed or refined the skills necessary to adjust into a productive society. And live life with pride and feel a since of satisfaction for the things they have overcome. People my suggestion is quite simple
It is not fair to send a person to death row so that they can live a sheltered life. They have no regard for life at all.
    1) Shorten the time limit to 5 years maximum for execution. With today’s technology if you are innocent it is evident.
    2) Bring back public executions. Make a social statement of the reality of violent crimes. Its not mandatory to witness an execution. It’s a choice
    3) Put the public executions on pay per view. And let the proceeds from the events fund our nations prison systems taking the bourdon off of the tax payers.
    Just a Thought

    • Well said. We could also have executed trading cards – “Swap you a Gacy for a Bundy” – I’m sure there are a lot of avenues available to help pay for the execution. I dont like media and the Crime Channel lionizing murderers – it hardly deters those who want celebrity when all they have on their side is a six-shooter and 7 IQ Points. The US should ban all guns excepting thos who live in rural areas. There is no need for a gun in the city – unless you are a policeman. Guns were made for only one purpose – to kill. Times have changed from the days of brown bears in your backyard and cowboys and indians…

    • It goes both ways. Non-Americans (and even Americans) who don’t believe in the death penalty are very rude and judgemental to those who do believe. Mostly believing it is out of hate. But it is not necessarily hate. I personally strongly believe in the death penalty. However, I hate no one. At all. I hate actions and behaviors, but not people. But I believe that some crimes are so heinous that only the death penalty is appropriate. That is my BELIEF and I should not be bashed for it or called hateful names, or whatever. I do not belittle people that do not feel the same. Everyone has the right to believe what they believe.

        • Kris,

What about the VICTIM and the victim’s family and loved ones? How does their lives change? That is what is important. Sorry! Plus, you obviously don’t read my blog. I have 2 family members who have been murdered, including my mother. I also have a brother who tried to kill his wife. For that, he got 14 years in prison. I do not believe he got enough time. He still has not taken responsibility for what he did to her and to their child, who was in the room and saw him try to kill her mother.

I am NOT uneducated at all, nor am I narrow minded. I came to my belief in the death penalty very carefully and with a lot of research and thought. It was not an overnight decision. Obviously you know someone on death row (actually I knew a woman on death row, but her sentence was changed), but have you at all thought about the victims of these crimes? Do you know or care about how their loved ones feel? Take some time to think about them FIRST, not the killer. And that person or any other death row inmate did not “find” themselves on death row. Their actions that they chose put them there. It was not an accident. It was a decision. That decision was obviously selfish, as the victim is no longer alive. That death row inmate decided that it was up to them as to what that victim’s future was. Very selfish indeed.

        • I know I’m weighing in long after the fact, but, I just have to ask. A comment was made saying if ever you have a family member end up on the row – you’ll think differently. Well, to this I say, ” lord forbid, that the person with this sentement ever lose a loved one to a monster such as the individuals living out days they DO NOT deserve, on death rows acrooss the country”. As in any & all situations, there are those VERY few wrongly accused. For them, The Lord, without a doubt, has their purpose in mind. The U.S. legal system is, without question, lopsided towards greater financial gain. Having said that, you only need be literate to know, IT IS, BY FAR, THE FAIREST & best in THE UNIVERSE! Not perfect, but atleast humane.Due process is a concept that benefits ONLY those still breathing – living. It does absolutely zero for the innocent child whose life is so horrificly taken by the very person intrusted with their safety. No matter the manner of death, there simply is no greater atrocityon earth, than the evil that takes the very life she not only created, but came never so near her own death than when she delivered that innocense into this world. The irony is simply profound. Take a good look at the reletively short list of 51 female death row inmates across the country. The # of those on death row for killing their OWN CHILD, is whats sickening, it’s gut wrenching. And hope? Where is the possibility of hope for those taken from this life? THINK – for petesake, BEFORE you writethat inmate for whom you have so much compassion(that is a positive statement about your character though)ask yourself ” Where was their compassion when they were taking the life of that tiny, beautiful, inocent child?” Only the Lord can judge any of us, but somethings are beyond comphrension, far too diabolic to allow to walk among us. And I am only a mere sinner, who will forever have to ask for my own forgiveness for not forgiving.Whether it is my child or yours or one I’ll never even be aware… it is our responsibilty as a species to protect the children. Bless them, they only are even capable of love at such a young age, where would society be without a childs laughter, without their absolute gift of basic, instinctual love for their momma? I say, leave these souless females to the destiny of their own design. If asked in sincerity, The Lord, will never forsake them, and thats all they truely need and eons more than they deserve. I mean, lucifer was an angel look what he got for his evil deeds.

  29. Two wrongs DON’T make a right, but killing a murderer isn’t wrong. I wrote a friend of mine that was on death row until the day he died. I didn’t hate him, but he did deserve to die. His name was Michael Rodriguez, a few of you may know him as one of the texas 7. I was in prison with all of those guys. What they did was wrong, and they were already in prison for things they had done. All of you who think we should just let them out with a hug and kiss and some money in their hand, I just don’t understand. I don’t hate you for it, but you are some stupid bastards. What’s it going to take to show you that killers need to die. If if was one of your family members you wouldn’t feel the way you do. Or maybe you would write them and send them money if they killed your child or one of your loved ones. I just dont understand you.

  30. I wish they had the death penalty in Australia. That Brittany Holberg is a good sort, shame she’s a looney. They shouild speed up the process as there are far too many people on death row. If they are proven guilty of a crime that attracts the death penalty beyond reasonable doubt (such as eye-witness testimony or DNA), there should be no appeals, whack ’em straight into the gurney room and away they go – they deserve no 20 year holiday at expense of taxpayers. Lethal injection is humane enough for a dog, so process ’em like a production line! Executed people never do it again.
