Janice and Danny were from my hometown, Adairsville. I know that Marlena was returned to Adairsville to live with Danny’s mom and brother. His brother was crazy-they say from a head injury in the war, but could be his family too. I believe they only raised Marlena, so the baby that Janice had in prison may have been put up for adoption. Marlena used to come in the bank where I used to work, some of the other girls I worked with said she had problems, but she seemed nice enough to me. I also knew the lady who raised Janice. She was mean and had the stinkiest house you can imagine. Does not excuse what they did to that beautiiful girl, though. That was horrible, and they made the choice!

the uncle u are talkin abt(dannys bro) was injured in the military, strange yes but FAR from being “crazy” which most ppl thought that abt him, but he had a heart of gold & was a good person once u got to know him…he was a good uncle to marlena.

Why wasn’t my commentary added to this blog, being that Demetra was going to be part of our family before this happened. Everyone should know how great of a person she was.

Idk who you are saying that Demetra was about to become part of your family, but that is a lie. All her belongings were already packed in her car to leave Georgia the very morning she was murdered and move back to TN. She called me in TN just a few hrs before they killed her and said she was coming home to get a job and an apartment with me. She also called her mom and told her the same thing. She was my best friend

I was not able to find out anything on the Buttrum’s children. And since they were children, they were not involved, and I would not want to include them here. They should be able to grown up without this over their heads. I hope that is what happened.

she WAS indeed raised by dannys mother, she was a little peculiar( would make up stories like she was preg & still in elementary school) alot of ppl picked on her so i was always in fights taking up for her. Her grandmother evelyn was VERY strict on her(i think scared of how she would turn out) growing up marlena didnt want for anything. i felt for her & she was like a lil sis to me. she suffered some abuse frm her grandmother, verbal & physical…was taken away for a while durin her early teen yrs….but things did get better later on & went back home to her grandmother. Last i heard she sold all their land & property in adairsville & moved to alabama…i have been tryin to find her..

Thanx Melissa, children like Marlena always have a place in my heart, In a way so does Janiice-even though she’s where she belongs+commited an atrocity,35yrs is a long time+shes never getting out, Charlene Gallego or Karla Homolka got a pass for doing a lot worse+I wonder- did their looks play a role as opposed to Janice or Carol Bundy? Seems like the large, ungainly+homely suffer a worse fate whether its high school or the criminal justice system!

I don’t know if her looks influenced the cases but in the Gallego and Homolka case both women testified against the men. Also in the Holmoka case the authorities made the deal with her before they realized that she was fully involved in every aspect of the crime. Once the deal was made they couldn’t back out. Also her sentence might have been much greater than theirs because she and her husband committed their rape and murder with their child in the room and definitely awake. That might have explained why she got a larger sentence than Gallego even though the victim count was smaller.

Marlena was indeed very troubled & she did get taken away from her grandmother for a time because if abuse that I reported at school one morning we were getting ready for school and it had ecscalated & she came running to my house (across the street) screaming because her grandmother had hit her in the face with a belt buckle over something really stupid. Now I knew these people my whole life and I’m in NO way tryin to talk bad abt them, they had their good sides to them!! & Ms Buttrams home was NEVER dirty!!! This family had been thru hell & had a lot of problems obviously…I just pray that wherever marlena is out there that she is happy & doing well… I love her & miss her & she will always be a sister to me in my heart

I just read a new book about Janice and Danny titled Jan-the youngest woman on Georgia’s death row. I’ve always been interested in this case and I couldn’t help but feel poignant when I finished reading it. I know there was a horrible crime was committed but Jan was 17yrs old and been in prison 38yrs! She’s known nothing but suffering and degradation her whole life and I think she’s paid the price, let her out! Btw does anybody know what became of Danny’s 2older kids by a woman named Candy? Or what’s become of Marlana? Mara Kaufman f/b

Many States have changed the way they look at capital punishment. Sometimes they change the sentence to LWOP if it is easier for the State. Many times you never know why it is changed. It just happens.

Not in this case, Georgia put a woman to death a few years ago and it’s known why Janice was taken off death row….

Janice was 17yrs old when convicted, also it was found out that Danny married her at 15 after being released from a hospital claiming that he wanted to rape someone- after being on death row for over 10yrs it was decided that Janice should not be put to death.
