  3. You gotta admit that the odd thing is the burglars made it a point to kill the doctor’s wife, but then they left the others to die – and the doctor managed to escape; why didn’t he free his daughters? I hope the media provides more details soon.

  4. They tied him (husband) up in the basement and beat him with a baseball bat. They thought they had killed him. He was unconsious but woke up and was able to get out. He was crawling. I doubt he has any involvement. They probably killed the wife because she was screaming her head off for them to live her family alone!
I’ll never scoff at my husband again for telling us to make sure the doors are locked at night.

They have rage and clearly worthless genetics passed down by their wretched filthy parents that (abandoned them)unleashed them on society. One would have to question the quality of the person(not a fit human being) that would abandon their children.

  8. Dr. Petit was not involved and anyone who thinks differently is SICK. I was at the memorial and listened to him talk about his three loved ones who were tortured, raped and set on fire, and he deserves all of our respect. He is a man of strength and integrity and is going through the most devastating event that I could imagine ever happening. My heart goes out to Dr. Petit and his family. I hope that you can feel some sense of solace relatively soon.

  9. If you think the husband is involved than you obviously do not know this man. Dr. Petit is my husband’s endocrinologist. He is not only a phenomenal Dr., but he is genuinely a wonderful, kind human being who has helped so many through his work and simply through the type of person that he is. He confronted these men and was beaten with a bat. He was then tied up, he was unconscious for much of the time and bleeding badly. People who assume the husband is involved automatically, think this to be the case because it is all that you hear on t.v. and often times it is the case. However not this time. This man loved his family and lived for them. Why don’t you wait and get your facts before ignorantly and insensitively assuming the worst of a man who right now is emotionally broken from the loss of his family.

  10. How could you post pictures of these two monsters on your blog? I am wondering why it took the police 30minutes to get there and why the store didn’t alert police to two men buying rope and a stun gun. If the police were alterted and these two were taken in for questioning that same evening then these people would still be alive.

I don’t know how people like that father/husband can continue to even breathe after this monstrosity much less live. I am amazed that he spoke at the memorial, and at such length. Quite unusual.

  11. I am also wondering why those monsters were caught and arrested. If these men were black, they would have been shot to smitterines on the spot. Why why were they allowed to live longer than necessary?

  12. Gemma, It is not unusual that Dr. Petit spoke. If you watch and listen, it is obvious he is in complete shock and probably heavily medicated. Go to http://www.lifetomotion.com and listen to Chris and Lori Coble give a eulogy for their three small children, all of whom were killed in a horrific car crash. These people’s brains have shut down from the enormity of the grief and shock. It will be weeks before the reality sets in. At that point, Dr. Petit probably would not be able to stand and talk about his family the way he did at the funeral. There is no way in this case that he had anything to do with it.

  13. I just saw postings by some IDIOTS that speculated the doctor was involved in this gruesome business. These persons are nearly as ignorant as the perpetrators of these crimes. Only kneejerk reactionaries could imagine he would subject himself to being injured so horribly and unnecessarily in the process, and especially being a doctor whose livelihood depends on him having all of his faculties. Fifteen years ago in Fort Worth a surviving husband in a home invasion was likewise accused, in spite of being nearly killed also, and everybody who thought so was left looking as stupid as their attention-begging counterparts on this site when the real killers were caught. When people have conspired in such fashion in previous cases and put themselves in the picture rather than staying comfortably on the sidelines [e.g. Dana Ewell] while others did the dirty work, their own “injuries” have been far milder – no need for THEM to suffer serious wounds that might risk their health/life/future prospects when they’re trying to profit from such plots. I wonder that the narrowminded and insensitive spewing such uninformed “CSI”-flavored crapola stinking of “Law & Order” overexposure would sing a whole Billboard chart of different tunes were they to be in Dr. Petit’s terrible position instead of not-so-loftily removed from it. That kind need a reality check-cashing as seriously as Dr. Petit ‘s ruined life needs maximum justice. Thank the Force these persons won’t be on the jury, because from them he wouldn’t have a whispered rumor of it.

  14. Gemma… what the hell are you talking about? Where did the black comment come from? I believe their have been quite a few black murderers who have made it to trial and the pen alive and well. It seems like you are bringing a race issue into a topic that has no racial undertones at all. Why don’t we focus on relevant issues surrounding this matter instead on trying to incite unnecessary racism.

  15. So gemma, according to you your logic, if I go to the store to buy rope so that I can tie furniture down to my truck so that I can move it to my new apartment, the police should be notified? Are you on crack?

  16. People want to believe the husband/father had something to do with the crime, because if he did, it would mean the crime wasn’t really “random.’ People want to feel they’re safe. They don’t want to believe this could happen to anyone – it’s too anxiety-provoking to deal with that reality. Buying rope alone wouldn’t seem suspicious, but buying rope and a stun gun together should raise some questions. If the police had all the information we have now, maybe they would have shot them on the spot.

  17. In response to Ken619, I never said I thought for sure that the doctor was involved, and I don’t believe I should be labeled “narrowminded” because I raised a question. Any time the husband is the sole survivor of a break-in, it’s looks odd. Generally, in terms of physical size, isn’t the husband more of a “threat” to an intruder than the wife? Also, unlike the comments posted above, the news report in the state where I live didn’t give fuller details of the crime.

I am very ashamed to say that I personally knew Josh when he was 16. He went to my church, he and I used to snowboard often. All too many times he had already been in trouble and always had a way of smooth talking his way out or at least seriously reducing the punishment of his actions. As nice as his parents were, you can not put all of your faith into god and just “pray about it”. Josh needed medication for his disorders but was not given it because they thought he would try to overdose. Do not take this in anyway as defending him, he knew what he was doing and should be given then death penalty without asking any questions, may he burn in hell. I don’t know what else to say, I’m simply in shock, I always knew he was a bad apple……. but this is just mind blowing.

  22. Gemma, I also don’t understand why they set bail at any amount, given the fact that they have a witness to the crimes (the husband). And I think it’s actually worse – I think it’s possible (although not probable) to get a bail bondsman to post the bail, in which case these losers would only have to come up with 10% of the total amount. It’s creepy to think about. To Someone: a priest once told me: Pray as if everything depends on God, but work as if everything depends on you. Advice his parents should have followed, but still, he’s well into his 20s, and even if he had been medicated back then, he may not have continued taking medication once he was out on his own. Personally, I hope there are some men in the prison where these thugs land who are also outraged at these animals raping and murdering an 11 year old girl. I read somewhere that Komisarjevsky has a 5 year old daughter. Is this true?!!!?

  23. This story is absolutely sad, it was such a gruesome, horrible and totally senseless act of violence and it’s enough to make anybody, go out and purchase a gun. It’s sad that someone could invade your home, which is your main comfort zone and do something so malicious, as they did. 4 lives were interrupted, by these low life men, three are dead and one has to suffer the pain, of losing his entire family, all at the same time, this is so sickening to me! It’s an awful thing that someone could do something like this and then walk away, with no remorse, not even caring, who these death’s, will change lives forever. The daughter’s had to suffer, being that they were tied to their beds, unable to free themselves, knowing death was coming shortly. If you can’t be safe in your own home, you can’t be safe anywhere. These two men, went looking for trouble, they didn’t have to kill those people and apparently they don’t care, about going back to prison. To some, it may seems odd that the husband managed to get away, while his wife and children die, but has anybody stopped to think that the good Lord was watching over the father and wanted him to survive, so that he could testify against these two men and put them away for life, so that this doesn’t happen to other’s. It’a a bad situation, but something good came out this.

I heard Josh was on cocaine or crystal meth (which can make someone violient) I still can’t see how someone who never confronted anyone, never assualted anyone, didn’t carry a gun, etc. could do something so horrendous… My brother is a cop and even he says career cat burglers rarely are vioilent…he obviously needed medication and to get off drugs. He ruined, along with Hayes, so many lives including his own.

Joshua did have a daughter, Jayda, even own custody since her mom is also on drugs (so sad) I live near there and heard he was at the park with her earlier in the week….was bemoaning not having enough money to take care of her properly, etc. He must of had some psychotic episode, because his girlfriend and the mother of the daughter both said he was troubled but gentle. I still can’t absorb it fully, but gave money to the girls charities and pray.

  26. Being on drugs is absolutely no excuse. Being on drugs, he could still find and make his way into this family’s home, rape a little girl and set fire to their home. Some laws need to be meted out with double severity if people take drugs or alcohol before committing a crime. In Germany if someone drinks enough alcohol to intoxicate himself/herself and then cut his neighbour’s throat, then the punishment is much lesser, like ridiculously less than it would normally be and many people intending to commit a crime know this because they are thought to be less accountable for their actions. Life sentence is something like 25yrs anyways.

Imagine that father, Dr. Petit, having had to bury his entire family within hours of coming home from work that evening! That is an incomprehensible nightmare!
This is the reason why I don’t ‘do’ religion. This is the pay-off for the parents of the late Mrs. Hawke-Petit whose parents were religious people all their lifes. This is what they too have had to witness. Where was the GOOD God almighty during all of this?

I would like to suggest to the courts that those 2 be strung up in a public square so everyone could have a field day of self-justice. Cutting pieces off them bit by bit from the bottom up, then barbequeing the remainder.

  27. Regarding how those scumbags first spotted the mother & daughter driving from the supermarket, and how they targeted the family because they liked their car: I saw a security expert on Larry King saying how people should make their houses “less attractive” if they want to avoid being crime victims. Isn’t it sad that if someone works hard & earns a lot of money, but wants to live more safely, they need to drive a used Corolla and live in a shack?!!!

  28. Unfortunately, attractive houses are attractive to people who want expensive things. My sisters lived in New haven, lots of crime there, but were never robbed in 15 years, moved to Guilford and Old Saybrook, both rural, upper middleclass neighborhoods and were robbed twice. They didn’t have much, “house poor” but you are more apt to find things there. I’m always astounded at the cash these thieves run off with, thousands sometimes….one home had more in cash lying around than I have in my combined bank accounts!! You have to be careful, that’s just the world we live in.

  30. i have read everything that has been written, the thing that is still fishy is the bad guys never killed anyone, they all of a sudden turn into natural born killers. Come on I’m not buying it. They were fathers themselves and they loved there kids. They wanted the money that a rich man could offer them, not for them but for there families. And the father who saw there faces was not even an after thought that they should kill him too. they were not in a hurry they didn’t know that the police was coming. In to days world you have to be very creative if you want to get way with a crime. Perfect alibi, hit in the head and tied up in the basement, but not dead, or suffering from injuries that could have maimed him for life? I just saying it seems really fishy. My heart goes out to the mom and her girls, for they are the the only victims here and there killers need to be brought to justice who ever they might be. and we need to look at all of what happened here and keep a open mind to what really happened here. I’m just saying it looks really fishy. (insurance money? but thats another issue.)

  31. There seems to be alot of emotion flying around on this page, some believe the doctor may have been involved, others think that’s insane. Well, the truth is that the man/doctor is alive and his survival is fishy for one reason. “He was tied up in the basement.” Was any of the other family members left in the basement? And, if he loved his family so much why didn’t he try to find them before leaving their home. Case and point, his wife and daughters are dead and he’s alive.

  32. How can you think the father is involved? So, the poor man survived. He was badly beaten up and tied up in the basement, bleeding from the head. He was brought to St.Mary’s hospital in critical condition. He was later upgraded to stable condition. I live the next town over and have probably read more newspapers about it then you. Also, I have known this man for several years. He had enough money that he didn’t need the insurance money. Don’t you think if he was involved that these two murderers would be telling the police about his involvement? What do they have to lose now, nothing. If Dr.Petit was involved these men wouldn’t be going down alone, but would be telling of the Dr.’s involvement. What happened was gruesome and senseless. My heart goes out to the entire family, especially to Dr.Petit. He is a wonderful, kind man and a fantastic Dr. I can understand that people always jump to conclusions to blame guilt. This time you are far from the truth.

  33. There’s something I can’t help but wonder – and I’m not implying anything, it’s a reasonable question, so please don’t bite my head off: how in the world was the doctor able to untie himself, despite having severe head injuries from being beaten with a baseball bat and thrown down the stairs? He’s quite fortunate in that regard – either the intruders didn’t bind him very tightly, or he’s very strong physically.

  34. From the local reports he did not untie himself. He gained consciousness to find flames around him and hopped through the basement door. They found him on the ground outside still tied up. The oldest daughter also got out of being tied up in her bedroom and was found at the top of the stairs in the house. She had been overcome from the smoke however. I can understand people questioning the whole thing. It is just horrific. This man loved his wife and kids though. He always talked about them to my husband.

I have to take everything you guys said into consideration. These ARE legitimate comments and questions. I’ve heard it all before how “he loved his family so much, he would never have done that”. And he is the SOLE survivor. I just don’t want to believe that he could do this to his family. But I have said it before, we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. Now, they could SEEM like the perfect family in public, but what about in private? Could the father of been having an affair? I’ve seen men of his status with the belief that they would rather just kill their family than leave them, it’s shameful to them. I don’t know what to think about this case. I want to believe the father has nothing to do with this, but I just don’t know.

  36. Thank you Lindsay, for providing more details to people like me who don’t live in CT. This is the most grisly, horrifying murder I’ve ever read about. I guess NeedingHope’s above comment applies to me – I don’t know Dr. Petit, and I admit I was kind of hoping he was involved – only because the crime would then be less random, although still just as horrible. In addition to the killers’ cold-bloodedness, it’s the sheer randomness of this thing that makes it so unnerving.

  37. I just picked up the latest People magazine and read this horrible story. I can’t even fathom what those people went through. Those poor girls and their mother. My heart goes out to the family. I was brought to tears.

I have to admit – I know people are being chastized for even suggestion the father was involved. I too had the intial thought before I read the entire story.
Don’t get upset but, I think it is something that is becoming more and more common to see a family member or friend involved in the crime. It is just “normal” to be suspicious. There are many crimes in which you are stunned to find out someone you thought was innocent was actually involved.

Not that there can ever be a justice for the victims…. but, I say an eye for an eye…………………..

  38. No, I too have been suspicious when the husband/father is the sole survivor. There are so many examples out there that people will automatically want to place blame on the husband. Everyone has their right to their own opinion. I just say there is no way. This man is a good, kind man. He has been my husband’s Dr. for years. He has been there for my husband even though my husband has probably been his worst patient, not following instructions, etc. I could go on forever, but there is no point. People will believe what they want to believe. If the Dr. was involved it would come out. These murderers sitting in jail would speak up. They would never cover for him. Also, if the Dr. was involved wouldn’t he want the murders to happen quickly and to not be dragged out and then raping the wife and youngest daughter. I would bet everything that I own Dr.Petit had nothing to do with these horrific acts. It is so sad.

  40. Believe what you may, I know Dr.Petit and what kind of man he is. You can think up all kinds of motives if you like. These murderers would not be covering for the Dr. because he in turn would be taking care of their kids. But, whatever. We completely stand by Dr.Petit. If he should return to his practice my husband will be the first patient waiting for him. These two murderers don’t strike me as the smartest of men, so I’m sure as you say if they were covering for the Dr. they would crack. I would just bet all that I have that Dr.Petit is innocent. I could tell you what I know of him, but it would be wasted words. I will just leave it that we look up to him and we trust him with our own lives.

My only thought was that if he were involved in some way maybe he intended on a robbery and murder. Maybe (being criminals) they took it upon themselves to commit the other heinous acts.

At this point….. I am going to stay with the belief the Dr. was not involved. I can’t even imagine what he must be going through.

  42. I am sure if I didn’t live just one town over and have known Dr. Petit for the last several years, than my thinking would maybe somewhat similar to others that have posted here. All I can go on is what I know. I know this man. He is kind and decent. He always talked to my husband about his girls and my husband talked about our kids. My husband was not his best patient. Dr.Petit always treated him great though, regardless of the fact that my husband was a bit difficult in not following orders, etc. When my husband was critically ill and hadn’t gone to many of his appts. with Dr.Petit (because my husband is stubborn), Dr. Petit came down to the critical care unit and prayed with us. He followed his case and talked with me frequently. He also made sure that he was involved with every decision in terms of my husband’s care, eventhough his case was in the hands of the critical care Dr.’s. and not Dr.Petit. This guy cares about his patients around the clock. He, his wife and his two girls didn’t deserve this. It is sickening. what’s even more scary is that these men are not alone in this world. There are so many others like them out there. It makes me scared for my own family’s safety.

I would think why didn’t the father try to help? Maybe because he was so badly hurt he couldn’t comprehend how to get upstairs.. but at the same time, how did he manage to comprehend to somehow free himself from where he was tied and be found on the grass..

I am from Australia, and the report here says the wife was driven to the family bank the next morning, THEN she was taken back to the house to be sexually assaulted and then strangled.. If this happened, the husband could not do anything at all?

One other thing I have read is Joshua didn’t have any involvement in the rapes or assaults but did steal things from the home. It was suggested that Steven Hayes is the one that raped the wife and 11 year old girl and then set the house alight…

The first thing that came to my mind after reading the story is a movie that called I saw with my partner and cried my eyes out… “Law Abiding Citizen” – it is exactly the same plot without the housefire..
