Update: Christopher Barrios Jr. murder *Capital Murder charges filed – death penalty being sought*

christopher-barrios-jr.jpgFirst off, I just want to tell Christopher’s friends and family how sorry I am for the loss of such a beautiful little boy. I cannot imagine how you are feeling during this time. But, my thoughts are with you everyday. This tragedy has truly saddened me and I can’t shake it. This story is so horrific, so heinous, that I can barely hold my disgust and anger for what these “people” did to this child. This child who did nothing to them. But they did everything to him.

On Wednesday, George Edenfield, a convicted sex offender, along with his parents, Peggy and David Edenfield, were indicted for the murder and sexual molestation of Christopher. There are several charges filed against each defendant. And, not surprisingly, they are seeking the death penalty for all three. This is Georgia, where they DO sentence people to death, and they DO use the death penalty. So this is a good thing. If this crime does not call for the death penalty, what does? I cannot think of a crime that has been more horrifying as what happened to this child. The indictment contains grim details about the case that police and prosecutors had not previously revealed. It says Christopher died from asphyxiation March 8 — the day he was reported missing — after the suspects choked him while “ignoring his complaints that they were hurting him.” The indictment does not say which of the three caused the boy’s death. It also claims George Edenfield and his 58-year-old father sodomized the boy and forced him to perform oral sex while Peggy Edenfield watched and masturbated.

I am sickened and disgusted by what these “people” did to Christopher. It is unfathomable to me to believe that anyone could actually do these things to a child. They all knew what they were doing, knew it was wrong and that they should not do it. But they did anyway.

george-peggy-edenfield.jpgdavide-edenfield-donald-dale.jpg
George Edenfield        Peggy Edenfield      David Edenfield           Donald Dale

Also charged in the crime is a family friend (of the Edenfield’s), Donald Dale.

A friend of the Edenfield family, Donald Dale, was indicted on charges of concealing a death and tampering with evidence. Kelley said Dale did not become involved until after Christopher had been killed.

And what makes all of this so bad, is that this is not the first time that George or David Edenfield have committed sex crimes. George is a convicted sex offender with crimes against children.

Ironically, the Edenfields moved into the trailer park where Christopher lived last year because of a Georgia law intended to keep child molesters away from children. Sheriffs’ deputies told George Edenfield in September that he had to leave his home near downtown Brunswick because it was too close to a playground. Georgia law prohibits registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of schools and other places that draw children. His family went to live in the trailer park in October after George Edenfield was arrested for failing to move as ordered. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to probation March 5, three days before Christopher disappeared.George Edenfield was required to register as a sex offender after he pleaded guilty in 1997 to molesting two boys, ages 7 and 9. Prosecutors said he rubbed his clothed body “in a sexual manner” against the boys, who also were fully dressed. He was sentenced then to 10 years on probation. His father, David Edenfield, pleaded guilty to incest in 1994. He was accused of having sex with an adult relative who was not his son.

They should not have even been there. None of the families around there even knew that George was there. This sex offender was just put on probation earlier this month, before Christopher was murdered. Maybe if the Judge had put George in prison, this would not have happened.

  1. CHILDREN WHO DIE ARE NOT REALLY GONE

Children who die are not really gone,
But go to a place that is something like home,
Where they sleep the deep sleep, as quiet as stone,
Unitil we can join them when our lives are done.

Children who die are not really dead,
But just like good children tucked into bed,
Wait the long wait while we go ahead,
Till our tales are told and our tears are all shed.

Children who die feel no pleasure or pain
In the place where they wait till they see us again,
And all of us dance in a world washed with rain,
Where the sun shines so brightly no sorrows remain.

  2. I have never cried from reading the news until I found this story yesterday. I have long been against capital punishment, and this story has completly changed my mind.
These sick murders should have never been living free, while we have solders off fighting for our country missing their children every day. If I was our country’s president I would change laws TODAY. I would make sure these PREDATORS never have a socond chance to be free to commit any harm to any child, or person ever again.
It MAKES ME SICK. I will think about little Christopher every day and try to amagine the horror, fear, confusion he must have felt as he was abused then murdered. Kill the Edenfields.

  3. I am so disgusted with our world! Who comes up with these laws, “I’ll give you 10 days to move from your neighborhood, you sick freak child molestor, or else”. NO!! You remove that person physically from the area. There is NO SUCH THING as
rehabilitation when it comes to this, there should never be a second chance when it comes to this!!!
There is a special place in HELL for all child molestors, and that is the ONLY place they belong! Whenever I hear about protecting their rights, who protects these precious little children? I have 2 little boys, and I know this much, if anyone ever laid a hand on 1 hair of their head, they better be more scared of big momma!!!!
PARENTS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!!! Let’s put a stop to this CRIME !!!! We need to elect lawmakers to defend the laws that or forefathers made & use them in the MANNER THEY WERE INTENDED!!!! I want a world of everyone working together for peace & decency!
I have often thought that the way to END this type of atrocisty would be to cut off their gentials & attach it to were the nose should be. This way everyone knows who they are & what they did & then maybe we’d put a stop to it! Sorry if I offend anyone but my hurt hearts & aches whenevr I hear of this type of thing!!

  4. LolaGean,

I couldn’t agree with you more. Our society is so stuck on “rehabilitation”. Can’t they just come to terms with the fact that somethings cannot be rehabilitated. It makes me sick that they give people who are threats to our children second, third and even more chances in society. These people are NOTHING , they don’t contribute in any way positive whatsoever. They are not needed. I am a strong supporter of the one strike law and I pray that I will see the day when I can let my daughter go outside without me breathing down her neck. She’s only three now, so I’m holding on to a little bit of hope. The sad thing is that this almost does not seem real. It is beyond my imagination that someone could do this to a child. I feel like I’m watching a movie or something. I know it’s not though and I’m very scared for our’s and our children’s futures. Please let me know if you have any ideas on where to begin on putting a stop to this.

Why is we cannot make these suffer in agony-why is it? Both John Couey and this crowd should be put into general population instead of being protected-makes the system as sick as them, allow the ‘inside’ prison system handle justice-seems like true justice system has failed these little ones.
Just shove them through the gate and announce to the ‘jurors’ inside what scum has just moved in.
Trust me-they will clean up their neighborhood…and more appropriatly,if there is such a thing.

  8. Like everyone who has been following this case, I have been very upset and angry. Crying endlessly over the loss of such a precious life. This beautiful little boy didn’t deserve the fate he suffered and for that I blame the Georgia system for allowing these bastards to roam freely. I think one of these freaks was even in violation of his probation and yet the courts allowed a plea agreement and issued a slap on the wrist when his sick ass should have been in prison. Now an innocent child is dead and all we have are painful memories of what should have been. Please watch the video memorial of Christopher on CrimeLibrary. You will cry but you will also be motivated to not let his death go in vain.

  9. DEE I totally agree with you. Not only did we let poor Christopher down we let every child in our country down if we continue to give these people probation instead of a long term scentance.I believe that Christopher wants us to help any other child we can to prevent the Edenfields from EVER getting another chance to do it again. I like the image one commenter said that Christopher is in heaven playing with all the other children who died by horrible crimes and I like to visualize that it’s a good feeling it helps me make sense of such a sensless crime. I still cry all the time, it’s hard because my SON looks so much like Christopher and his little Brother looks like my Daughter. So it’s very hard I can’t seem to get him off my mind and so I am going to become pro-active in the fight to keep sex-offenders off our streets and in the jails waiting a death penelty sentence. I watched the memorial video and that helps too because you see him at his happiest moments and I take comfort that he had a VERY good life prior to what happened to him on March 8th, that also comforts me. May ALL the Barrios Family Reunite with their little Angel Christopher in heaven someday have faith in that because he is an ANGEL.

  10. How could a human being do such a cruel and heartless act to a helpless and innocent angel. They will all burn in hell for eternity for taking part in this. How and why are these convicted child molesters/sexual predators given another chance in society? It was obvious that they had problems to begin with. The criminal justice system failed Little Christopher when they allowed this devil back out onto the streets to violate another child in the first place. There are people who commit robberies and other crimes that do 15-20 years in prison, but these people are allowed to touch children in the worst ways and walk away with probation and less harsh sentences. It is time to really reevaluate the criminal justice system and lock these pedophiles up for good. One time is too many and there should automatically be a life sentence for these people. If this were my child, these disgusting low-life failures wouldnt have even made it back to jail. They would have suffered the exact same thing that little christopher did but 10 times worse. the criminal justice system is a joke

  11. Man, this story is the saddest thing that I have ever heard. I am a little late to this case but thanks to court tv, I was exposed to it. The Edenfields are sick fucks and deserve to go down for this. What more horrific crime to do than towards a child?. I have never cried when hearing a case but, when I heard of this I cried. Especially when seeing the pictures of young Christopher because he was so precious. He was a child full of innocence that was taken away by perverted people; CHILD MOLESTERS. Its sad and sick because one would not think that the whole entire family would be involved in something like this. The mother, father and son, how crazy!. That makes me to believe that, the father probably was molesting his own child (son) when he was growing up. The Law should be more stern towards sexual predators, child molestors and such. Probation is just not going to do it, rehabilitation is not a efficient factor. May Chris rest in peace: an angel now has wings…

  12. My heart is completely broken since I heard about this story. Watching the memorial video was haunting…such a beautiful little boy. He seemed so kind and sweet in his pictures with his little brother. My God…my heart aches for the Barrios family. My prayers are with you.

I echo everyone’s sentiments, anger and rage over the fact that Edenfield Jr. has a prior record in which he was brought up on charges of child molestation. Just because the Edenfiled’s did not live across the street from a playground or a school does not mean the streets are safe and children will not be harmed. Edenfield Jr. should have not been out on probation. I concur…death penalty is the only way to deal with crinimals like the Edenfields. They are far beyond rehabilitation. Rehabilitate people who steal, shoplift or loose their tempers. People convicted of such hanious crimes against children should have either life with no parole or the death penalty. Enough of rights for these predators. We desperately need to enforce Federal/National guidelines for children protection rights and demand no more! No more tolerance towards predators who prey on the innocent. Stricter laws have to been in place. It is not enough to move such “people” just a few feet away from playgrounds and schools. They should not be allowed to be on the streets.

I’m a NY’orker however I am writing to the Sr. Senator of GA and my own senator about my outrage and heartbreak over the death of Christopher. Enough is enough.

May you rest in peace dear sweet angel..

The so-called judicial systems have not caught up with this fact or are completely ignoring it for the expediency of moving on to the next case. I will never be the same again after knowing the horrendous details of the suffering of Christopher Barrios.

Pedophiles are the real terrorists for children and their families. Instead of putting so much effort into Iraq and Iraqi oil revenues, you would think our government would start to invest in the terrorists at home who stalk, molest, rape, murder innocent children. People need to stand up and let legislatures know that we want something done about this NOW!

Go to our most recent story of Christopher read the 58 blogs already listed you will get more information on the CREEPY Edenfields, I’ll give you some info I found out on my OWN. You are right a Pastor in Brunswick verified George was molested but the SAD thing is NO ONE EVER REPORTED IT, Not even the PASTOR or TEACHER or even his own MOTHER (now we know why). But David Edenfield Sr. in 1994 MOLESTED his own Biological Birth Daughter, He was given probation (GO FIGURE) who now will NOT have anything to do with that side of her family. I do not have cable but when the case comes on COURT TV (actual Trial) can you email me and let me know so I can have a friend tape it for me. I live in NC so I may try to goto the trial for 1 day or so. Thanks so much,

  17. We are all hurt and rightfully outraged by what happened to Christopher. It is a sick, senseless crime that never would’ve happened had the courts taken the Edenfields more seriously. As Tess and Georgia said, child molesters are beyond rehabilitation and should never be released. George Edenfield twice molested and was given probation, which he violated. Instead of being locked up, judge Stephen Scarlett gave him a slap on the wrist and now Christopher is dead. To further show what a joke this court is, the exact same judge has been appointed to preside over Christopher’s murder trial. If that isn’t a slap in the face to this little boy and his family, I don’t know what is. Everyone who is seriously pissed off and hurt right now should get involved. Channel your energies in the direction of e-mails, phone calls or letters to the Georgia governor, Georgia legislators in Washington, and your own governor and legislators. I would also suggest contacting Bill O’Reilly and Oprah Winfrey since they have frequently championed the safety of children on their shows. It’s easy to sit back and do nothing. But it is our duty, our moral obligation, to help protect the children of this country.

  18. FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH:

No one can say the media has not been broadcasting the many reports of children being harmed by child molesters, child rapists, and child killers. One just needs to tune into CNN from time to time. It never fails, “another one down” (another child molested, raped, or killed). No one can say the media underreports this. Nancy Grace makes it a priority on her show. She even lobbies Congress from time to time on this very important subject. It’s a major catastrophe in America! Where is everyone else on this subject? Try as you will to protect your children, no one is immune from having a child abducted, molested, or killed. It could happen to anyone’s child.

There is no greater terrorist than the one who brutalizes innocent children, yet our country continues its preoccupation with the Iraq war and the Anna Nicole saga–while the senseless war on the nation’s children goes on just like another news report that will be forgotten with time.

Will Senators Clinton and Obama take on this effort? Will John Edwards? Does John McCain know about the suffering of 6-year-old Christopher Barrios (the innocent child who was allegedly raped by the entire Edenfield family, and then strangled to death)? As a former mayor of New York, did Giuliani take on this challenge? One thing’s for sure; no one gets my vote until someone starts talking! And, according to our member database (all those folks writing our group), many others feel the same way too. One just needs to visit web blogs of seriously ticked-off mothers to understand who are the next voting blocks. In one of the blogs that I visited, one African American woman wrote, “No one gets a pass from me because they happen to be black or female.” In unison, each person responded to that message with, “DITTO!” One other parent wrote this quote, “They certainly won’t get my vote if all they talk about is Iraq and how things are getting better over there; I worry about the terrorist that will snatch my son off his bike.”

If this is not the time for serious talk about protecting children from child abusers and child killers, then we are all out of time. It’s time to ask the tough questions of those who wish to represent us. How do you all intend to protect America’s children from the terrorists amongst us? How many more news reports of molested, raped, murdered children will it take before someone does something significant about the broken system that allows child molesters access to harm children? It’s time to stop playing the “blame the victim” game. It’s not the child’s fault! It’s not the fault of unsuspecting mothers? Psychopaths don’t wear name tags. And, progressive people know that this is not an undereducated problem nor is it only a poor person’s issue. Economic status has nothing to do with a child molester seeking or gaining access to a child. Offenders come in all forms–wealthy, middle class, and poor.

We are a mixed group of people–we came together out of sadness, conviction, resolve, and transformation. Some of us are with children and some are without. Some have experienced the sadness of knowing their children’s pain. Some of us have never experienced it. When we shared our stories, we all experienced it. If you sincerely care about protecting innocent children, we are a part of your story, too!

  24. The molestation and murder of little Michael Barrios is compelling because he was such a sweet little boy. He was a very handsome “little man” and I am sure he would grown up to be a very lively and adorable teen.

There are two problems I have with the posters and the majority of the news stories on his death, though. The first, and most compelling, problem is the implication that strangers (or people not at all known to the child) are committing these molestations and that they should be put to death or receive life in prison. If one does an iota of research, that “conventional wisdom” will be completely blown out of the water in about five seconds. Yet, all we ever hear in the media – or at least the more sensationalized cases- are those done by strangers (Edenfield, Couey and Duncan are three prominent cases.) Those three cases contrast with the tens of thousands of parental and familial sexual abuse of children, yet they are not reported on a national basis, or even a local basis. Yet, aren’t those children just as precious or just as victimized? Why do we as a society continue to perpetuate the myth that strangers (or registered sex offenders) are committing the abuse when it is patentlly not true? Then when you finally realize the problem, what are you as people going to do about it?

Second problem: Michael’s father is also a registered sex offender (statutory rape from a charge 13 years ago). Yet in some people’s books, he, too, is a child molester because he was 23 at the time and she was under 18. If you don’t believe my information – I wouldn’t blame you because the media stopped reporting it – but look at the early reports. Is Chris Barrios like George Edenfield, John Couey or Joseph Duncan? They’re all sex offenders, if you were to continue that line of thinking. And if as some of the poster propose a one strike rule, shall we imprison statutory rapists to jail for life?

It is high time that the public demand the government stop loading up the Megan’s List registries with people who should not be listed. That way, the true predators (like the Edenfields) can’t hide behind people like Christopher Barrios Sr.

In fact, if one was to look for people responsible for Michael Barrios, Jr., they should definitely look beyond the Edenfields. The state of Georgia, in its infinite wisdom, deemed that Christopher Barrios and his children did not deserve protection because he is a registered sex offender. They made him move to one of the few places available to people like him under Georgia’s draconian law- and right next to a mobile home that the Edenfields lived.

The state, too, has blood on its hands in the death of Michael Barrios. It pretty much makes me sick that some children are deemed more worthy of protection than others.

  27. Again, I ask: what is society going to do to PREVENT these crimes from occuring in the first place? As it stands now, in people’s absolutist ways of thinking, the following should occur:

    1. Lock up a child molester or child predator on the first offense. (Of course, the way the state views these things, Michael Barrios Jr.’s father, Chris Barrios, would have been locked up for life in 1994 and little Michael would never have been born.)

    2. Impose the death penalty or “jailhouse justice” after the child dies. All consequences aside, what is that retribution after a child dies going to do for the dead child?

    3. Impose the harshest of residency restrictions on registered sex offenders. Of course, if they had enforced the ones Georgia passed, Chris Barrios and Michael Barrios would have been living together in some swamp in Georgia or the family would have had to split up. (Does society really want to encourage families to break up?)

The solution, in my eyes, is the following:

    1. Create risk assessments for those who are child molesters and impose severe consequences.

    2. Weed out Megan’s Law lists which also have those at low or no risk. Right now, the high risk folks are hiding behind the low risk folks.

    3. Impose a moritorium on “feel good” laws like residency restrictions for registered sex offenders (until they can clean up the Megan’s Lists), unless you’re willing to see more children of registered sex offenders be killed.

    4. Have a national conversation about the true nature and re-offense rates of sexual abusers. Realize that 90 percent of child abuse is committed by people known to the child and emphasize that stranger danger is rare.

    5. Take the politicians out of the equation. All they do is muck it up and imposing silly and inane laws which do NOTHING TO PROTECT CHILDREN. The experts, particularly Jill Levenson, a longtime expert in the field of sexual offending and a professor from Florida, and Nancy Sabin, executive director of the Jacob Wetterling Foundation, deserve a major place at the table. They genuinely care about solutions, rather than grandstanding politicians with political agendas.

    6. Recognize that some children who have been sexually abused as children will grow up to sexually abuse others as adults. Find them and get them counseling without punishing them. We need to stop the cycle of abuse.

    7. Encourage the responsible media to hold the irresponsible media accountable for the latter’s coverage of this issue. Shame the irresponsible media (many newspapers, Nancy Grace, Bill O’Reilly, Opray Winfrey, Glen Beck and others) into publishing or broadcasting pieces that show the true picture of sexual offending. De-emphazise stranger danger as the norm while recognizing that familial and family friend child abuse is much more frequent. Stop running “conventional wisdom” statistics that mislead the public on re-offense rates for sexual offenders. Differentiate between the classes of offenders.

    8. The public should demand factual and objective information and government policy on this issue, rather than hysterical and emotional media coverage and government policy. Stop the demonizing, the blame game, the witch hunts, the mischaracterizations, etc. for sake of the increased circulation/ratings and boosts to political careers which ensues now.

This is another story along with The Brianna Lopez murder that has devestated me more I have ever heard, I would give my life to bring back those Beautiful angels, Christopher Barrios jr was such a sweet Beautiful innocent Child, His face is stuck in my mind forever, what those sick bastards did to him is beyond belief, I cry every time I think about him, Brianna, and all the other children I hear about who are raped and murdered for no reason because of those sick twisted individuals who are mentally and morally beyond help, they should be handed over to us people who will happily get justice on behalf of those Beautiful children, these children stay in my heart every single day, As a mother myself, it’s stories like Christophers why I won’t let my children out of my sight, To this day I will never understand why sex offenders are ever released once they commit a crime against children because a pedophile can NEVER be helped, They never stop abusing, that is a proven fact. God Bless Christopher’s family and please know your Boy touched so many lives.

  37. I am one of those people who needs to know, not to be nosey but to be more aware and protect my daughter. This is truly the worse story i have ever heard in my life. Just looking at these picture seriously gave me a chill to just look at faces of evil, death. The death penalty is like giving them candy. Keep them in prison. Let them suffer the way that beautiful little angel suffered. Let the other inmates know what theyve done because let me tell you, in prison no matter what crime u committed, they do not except any harm on a child. Big tough killers have kids of their own. So hearing about this WILL piss them off. Especially for the female. Now that this boy is at rest, I truly will say a prayer for him and his family. People, please though it is a devastating story, it must not be buried and never remember. People need to know as well as children that their are SICK PSYCHOTIC MONSTERS out there and to be AWARE and PREPARED. I am in tears typing this.

  40. It is so heart breaking to read about such a horrible act against this child, I was just looking up about the registered sex offenders in my neighborhood since we recently moved, I have 3 little boys, my two youngest ones are to little to adventure away from our home without supervision, but I have a 10 year old that I am just now allowing to ride his bike around our neighborhood, but to my knowledge I just found out that there are not 1 sex offender but 7 registered sex offenders. I am scared for him, and to be honest I am lost with this choice of allowing him to continue riding his bike away from our home or shelter him just for my peace of mind, I am such a parniod mother when it comes to their safety, with locking the windows even at night since there has been cases where children have been taken from the comfort of their own beds. I feel that our system fails our children, yes of course there is a registration of these people, but when you look up the detail it gives you all the techincal terms of the charge, but I want to know what they did,the age of the child and the sex of that child. How do we protect our children if imformation is givin so vaguely to us.Also we live exactly 2 blocks from the school my little boys will be attending, It makes me so angry when they can live just a few blocks of the school, and my neighborhood has many kids that walk to and from alone, I have noticed. I told my husband that I will be taking them and picking them up. the thought just if the possiablity of this happening to my child let alone to another innocent child. If i have to shelter, be parniod to see my children grow up then thats what I must, There should never be any second chance for these sick, demented people, If that could be true this little boy would be here celebrating possible his 10 or 11 birthday rather then us commenting on how tragic this is. I am so sorry for christopher and his family, I cant imagine how a parent ever recovers after this, if ever at all. MUCH LOVE
