Mark S. Serrano, 29, and Charles W. Gilleo Jr., 31, have been charged with one count each of second-degree murder, state police said. They have been arraigned and are in Dutchess County Jail.
These two men have been arrested for the murder of Tony Morey, the father and husband, only.
Police say Mark Serrano, 29, and Charles Gilleo Jr., 31, were partners in a small time, local drug dealing operation with Manuel Morey. At a news conference Friday night, prosecutors and investigators refused to offer a motive, but said the two men had murdered Morey.
They are also believed to have killed Morey’s wife and three children. The men have not yet been charged in the other four deaths, but investigators were quick to add that they are seeking no additional suspects. Both men were arraigned Friday, each charged with one count of second-degree murder.
The killings were apparently revenge for something with their drug business.
Earlier this week, state police said Morey was a drug user and small time drug dealer. Sources on Friday said state police believe Morey’s drug dealer partner had a dispute with Morey and killed him in his home. The suspect is then believed to have killed morey’s wife and their three boys. Police believe the killer then burned down the Morey’s house to destroy the evidence. After burning down the house, sources said investigators believe the killer took the Morey’s car and drove it east to Lomalla Lane in neighboring Hopewell junction and burned the car. Then police believe their suspect walked a half mile east to his home.It is unknown how the second suspect is tied into the case.
Previously it was believed that the children were killed first, in front of the parents. However, it appears different now. It is unclear if the suspects have confessed or if they have made statements to other people who have told the police.
It is not clear what cracked the case. But the suspects, for all the attempts made to cover their tracks, were apparently not careful enough. Investigators said both men made certain statements, but refused to characterize them as confessions.
The police are not looking at any other suspects, but it has been said that they are looking at having the grand jury hear the case to determine more charges.
It is now being reported that the murders happened while the men were robbing the house.
A court document obtained by the Poughkeepsie Journal accused the men of first-degree robbery at the home the Morey family rented, but no robbery charges have been filed. No charges were filed in the deaths of the four other family members found dead in the home. Prosecutors and investigators have said they believe Serrano and Gilleo killed Morey, his wife and the couple’s three children.
