Terrance and Marie Duffy with their son Patrick
On November 18, 1986, Duffy’s parents, Terrance and Marie Duffy, were murdered by Kenneth Miller and Sean Wentz during the robbery of a Montana bar owned by Duffy’s parents. Wentz and Miller, who were teenagers at the time, were convicted of the murders and sentenced to 180 years in prison.
On November 18, 1986, Miller and Sean Wentz went hunting after completing work for the same janitorial service. They were drinking. After failing to drop a deer that Miller shot at, they returned to Helena. Wentz picked up his 12-gauge shotgun and they purchased more beer.
From Kenneth Miller’s appeal: Miller and Wentz then proceeded south from Helena. After hunting near Clancy for awhile, they went to Tings bar, in Jefferson City, and consumed more alcohol. Miller suggested they go to Boulder Hot Springs. The two departed at approximately 8:45 p.m. and arrived in Boulder at the Lounge bar. During this portion of the trip, Wentz fired his shotgun four or five times out the window of Miller’s white 1968 Volkswagen.
Once at the Lounge, Miller and Wentz drank tequila and received instructions to the hot springs from Terrance Duffy, the owner and bartender. They headed south but could not find the resort. Wentz testified that they agreed to a robbery plan about eleven miles south of Boulder and turned off the highway onto a lane that led to the Wortman family residence. Miller claimed he turned off to urinate. He stated that the door to the car was open and he was unaware of what Wentz was doing due to loud rock music from the car stereo. Wentz, with a shotgun, was observed by Bill Wortman, who opened the door to the trailer house when he heard dogs barking. Wortman, [231 Mont. 502] a 14 year-old-boy, testified that he was frightened and slammed the door when Wentz pointed the gun at him.
Wentz testified that he and Miller were at the trailer and Wentz had the shotgun. Marilyn Wortman testified to hearing a car start and seeing lights. She and another son, Shannon, both saw taillights. Marilyn called the police. Shannon Wortman also testified to finding a shotgun shell in the yard the next morning. The shell was taken by Mrs. Wortman to the Sheriff’s Office and identified later at trial by experts as being ejected from Wentz’s shotgun.
Deputy D.D. Craft responded to Wortman’s call at 9:10 p.m. At approximately 9:15 to 9:20 p.m. he saw a white Volkswagen heading toward Boulder and radioed Chief of Police Dennis Sullivan. Sullivan testified to observing a white Volkswagen at the Lounge at approximately 9:20 p.m.
Wentz and Miller testified that they drove back to the Lounge in Boulder. Wentz claimed they returned for the purpose of robbing the bar. Wentz testified he brought the shotgun in to frighten the victims and that Miller entered the bar in front of him. He said Duffy came from around the bar and a struggle ensued. Wentz said Miller encouraged him to shoot Duffy. During the struggle, according to Wentz’s first statement, the shotgun discharged. The County Attorney, John Conner, challenged Wentz as to conflicting previous statements and physical evidence. Wentz recanted this statement and testified that Miller grabbed the gun and shot Duffy. He said Miller handed the gun back to him and began picking up the spent shotgun shell when Marie Duffy entered the bar. According to Wentz, as Mrs. Duffy came into the bar, Miller reached around him and pulled the trigger while Wentz held the gun.
Miller claimed they returned to the Lounge for further directions to Boulder Hot Springs. He stated that as he and Wentz sat drinking at the bar, Wentz and Duffy began to argue. Wentz left the bar and returned with the shotgun. Upon seeing the gun, Duffy struggled with Wentz and the gun fired. Miller said he went to the side of the bar next to a beam and did not see the actual shooting of Duffy because he was on his knees facing the wall.
After the shooting, Miller stated Wentz ordered him to retrieve the casing and threatened to shoot Miller if he did not comply. Miller claimed Mrs. Duffy then entered the rear of the bar and Wentz shot her. Miller claimed Wentz forced him to grab money from the cash register and some liquor bottles. Miller gave the cash to Wentz. The two returned to the Volkswagen and proceeded to Helena. Miller [231 Mont. 503] said Wentz claimed he killed 32 people in California, had made it 34 and could make it 35.
The local Boulder authorities were notified of the homicides at approximately 10:00 p.m. The Helena authorities were notified by an all points bulletin. Upon returning to Helena, Miller and Wentz proceeded to steal a Jeep and pickup at a local car dealership. They then drove the stolen vehicles to the residence of Tammy Harding, Wentz’s fiancee. She testified that Wentz and Miller entered the apartment and Wentz told her two people were down in Boulder and Miller had shot them. At trial, inconsistent testimony was presented that Wentz told Harding he had shot the Duffys after Mr. Duffy and he had argued.
Wentz grabbed clothes and additional ammunition from the apartment. He and Miller then drove to a local car wash, left the Jeep and returned to the automobile dealership to retrieve Miller’s Volkswagen. Chester Richey, a fellow employee of Wentz and Miller for the janitorial service, testified Wentz was brandishing the shotgun when he returned to the dealership. Wentz told Richey not to call the police. Richey stated Miller did what Wentz told him.
After Wentz and Miller left Tammy Harding’s residence the first time, she telephoned her father and he had his wife notify the Helena police to dispatch an officer to Tammy Harding’s residence. Mr. Harding went to Tammy Harding’s residence and testified to seeing the two vehicles return with “the black Chevy pickup coming first into the driveway.” With Miller driving the Volkswagen and Wentz driving the pickup, the two did return to the circular driveway next to Harding’s apartment but did not leave their vehicles. Miller claimed he drove to Harding’s residence hoping the police would stop them on the street. Miller and Wentz sped away from the complex when they saw Helena Police Officer Brad Hampton through Tammy Harding’s windows. The two individuals fled with Hampton in pursuit ultimately returning to the car wash.
Hampton testified that he stopped Wentz and told him to get on the ground face down. As Wentz did so, he threw some money and stated that Miller had done the shooting. Miller at this time did not stop but instead drove over a rocky embankment and onto the road heading away from the car wash. Miller was stopped shortly thereafter by officer Frank Melton who ordered Miller to go “down into a prone position on the ground” at which time keys to the stolen Jeep fell out of his pocket. These keys were found underneath Miller but [231 Mont. 504] he stated they were not his. Miller denied any knowledge as to why he was stopped.
Wentz, after being read his Miranda rights, made several statements to the arresting officers and officers at the Lewis and Clark County Jail to the effect that Miller had done the shootings. Wentz also gave a recorded statement to Jefferson County authorities. Miller denied that he was ever in Boulder but was too intoxicated to make any other statements.

I am unfortunaly a first cousin of Sean Wentz. I have read many articles in various papers, but have never really seen much on how Sean got to the point he was at the time of the killings. He had been in and out of homes and jail most of his young life and my mother and father even let him live with us when he was 16, but he was to violent and had to be sent home. I would like some how to get his story out in hopes that someone will see the signs of a killer in the making and stop the cycle. Thank you, Kathy Wentz

I’m truly sorry to see Sean come to such a pass. I was his roommate at Bear Creek Ranch in Lodi, CA some years ago.
We sat up many a night talking about life in general. 🙂
Several times I’ve thought about writing him in Deer Lodge, but don’t quite know what to say after all these years.

Sean lost his mother at the age of 12. He had a hard life as a young child and his mom had no control over him. He was a child the system forgot. Sean always had anger issues and he did not know how to control himself. Losing his mother made it even harder on him because he knew there was really no one who wanted to take him in. His Uncle Don was the one he looked up to, but losing him just made matters worse. Maybe if he had known his father and had a chance to be in a home with both parents he might of had a better chance at a better life. Losing his mom at such an early age only added to his anger and his anger just seemed to grow . Of course the frinking an ddrugs did not help the anger and the pain he was living with.

Many people have a much harder life than he did and they do not turn out as killers. He made choices and one of them was to participate in this murder. I am sure he knew right from wrong. Having a troubled childhood does not excuse his behavior.

Sean Wentz was ordering Miller around with Miller doing what Wentz told him to do. From the record we can see that Wentz has the owner of the shotgun and had it in his control throughout.
Importantly, a shotgun just doesn’t go off on its own, the trigger must be pulled. Additionally b Wentz testified that Miller reached around him and pulled the trigger as the gun was pointed a Marie’s head from diagonally across the bar.. This is highly unlikely.
I’ve met this Kenny Miller who is actually OK. Kenny completed various self help groups and maintained clear conduct within the prison. The prison gave him a trustee status after he settled into the prison after a number of years. He drove from the prison to Missoula weekly unsupervised and never absconded.
Conversely, Sean Wentz was the leader in this crime. He was the person who actually did the killing not Miller who was merely present at the scene of the crime. Miller was only complicit because he was driving his own vehicle throughout. He ran scared after Wentz shot those people. Wentz was convicted of perjury for mailing false statements concerning the murders. Ken Miller was paroled some years ago on good behavior and has complied with the terms of his parole. These guys were both parole eligible after serving 17.5 yeard as a matter of Montana law. I believe Wentz is still an inmate at Montana State Prison at Deer Lodge.

Wentz was also paroled, but 8 years later than Miller. Miller was released in 2007, but Wentz didn’t get out until 2015.

No excuses, just the truth. He deserves to be in prison for the rest of his life, in fact I believe in the death sentence…maybe this is a case where it should have been used….All I did was state the facts about the life this young man lived at the time of the killings.

I agree, he knew right from wrong, I am just saying that in our society we see so many young people in trouble before they are adults and part of it is because the system lets these kids drop through the cracks. Maybe he would not have committed the horrible crime if he had guideance when he was younger. He made his choice and he has to live with what he did everyday for the rest of his life. I pray he knows what he did was so wrong and how many people were hurt by his actions.

This 1986 murder of the Duffys has recently emerged as a possible factor in the mindset of Dr. Amy Bishop, currently under arrest in Alabama for shooting six of her academic colleagues during a departmental faculty meeting, killing three of them, on Feb. 12, 2010.
Investigation of Dr. Bishop’s past in Massachusetts has uncovered her shooting and killing her brother with a 12 gauge shotgun in 1986, a death ruled accidental at the time by the Braintree police, the MA State Police, and DA Delahunt. After shooting her brother, she fled with the shotgun to a nearby automobile dealership, where she threatened someone at gunpoint in an attempt to obtain a getaway car.
A 2010 review of crime scene photos after the 1986 Massachusetts shooting reveals the presence of a newspaper article describing the Duffy murders, done with a 12 gauge shotgun and followed by the killers’ stealing a vehicle from an auto dealership.
The linkage of all these murders is very tenuous, but disturbing nevertheless. When we throw a stone into the pond of time, the ripples go on forever.

The Duffy’s were very good people from all accounts. Having met their son years ago, and been impressed by his kindness and his decency, I can’t help but think they must have been very good people indeed. The world is a much sadder place for their loss.
I too had a violent and turbulent childhood. By the time I was 16 I’d seen more of all that violence than I ever wanted to. I had anger management issues too. You bet I did, but I’m still not capable of pulling out a shot gun and killing two innocent older people on a whim.
I don’t care what these men experienced as a child. There is no excuse for what they did.
You want to have pity for someone? Have it for Patrick and Carlyn Duffy, and their kids, NOT for the murderers of their parents/grandparents respectively.
That one of these guys is now out on parole is very hard to believe. They were old enough to pick up a gun and attempt to rob someone. They were old enough to kill two innocent people in cold blood.
They both should have been left in prison for life.
The irony here?
The son of the people they killed is probably a better person than I am regarding this matter. Good man that he is, he probably does have pity for them, maybe even has forgiven them.
He is that kind of a guy.

What’s left out is that Wentz later admitted he was the shooter (hence the perjury charge 1992). That’s why Miller is out on parole.

ken worked with my dad a great many years on the prison fire crew and was a hard working and quiet young man who respected the authority of the prison staff…..was relieved to hear that wentz finally came clean about what REALLY happened

I worked with Ken Miller in 2009. When he told me that he had been in prison, and I learned what he had been in prison for…I was shocked!!!! He is one of the nicest, and most helpful men that I know. Fortunately, Ken has turned his life around.

I came across this entire story quite by accident: back in 2008 or so I saw Patrick Duffy on the GSN show Bingo America, and thought he was quite interesting as that show’s host, although I did notice that he was sort-of passive/aggressive towards the men of the show. It’s hard to describe, but I could just tell there was something there…almost as if he didn’t like to see them succeed, or had a hidden desire for them to fail. I thought, jeez, if I’m right about this impression, then what an asshole! As a gameshow host it’s nice to have a little witty banter, but you never try and takes sides or insult anyone. Well, cut to maybe a year later, Duffy no longer the host, and I see this documentary, like Hollywood’s Most Shocking stories, and I learn about the Miller/Wentz murderers and his parent’s death….now whether that is tied into what I saw in his rather stilted and honestly subvertly hostile behavior towards the male contestants on the show is purely speculation…although I did read that he is a devout Nicherin Buddhist, so, just thought I’d share my Duffy story!!

i recieved a letter from kenneth in 2003 expressing his sincere apology after all these years he wrote an apology letter to one of the victims and for a man after all these years doin that and became a model inmate he did turn his life around god forgave and ken learned his mistake and went on he has to live with that the rest of his days wentz is still gettin in trouble in prison and will never change he admits all this he can rott in hell. As for kenneth he got a second chance at life and patrick duffy and his family will go on and i bet he did forgive in his own way God works in mysterious ways u live with something as horrific as this if u have a concious u will forever be burdened and kenneth is and tryin to make peace with god is not easy so let him alone and do what he needs to do. Dont judge we all have faults

Yes, we all have faults, but committing murder is NOT a fault or personality flaw. It is a decision to commit an action. Please don’t make it sound like it was beyond his control. That is an insult to murder victims and their loved ones.

I lived in Boulder at this time period and knew Both “Babe and Duff” Duffy! they were both stand up people! (it used to be a badge of honor to have been thrown out of the lounge for cussing by Duff) somthing that hasn’t been mentioned here is that they had just sold the lounge and were just staying on to help the new owners learn how to run it before they left in a new RV to live out their golden years. My condolences (belated) to Patrick. we never met but his parents were very proud of him as all the pictures around the bar could attest! Babe! Duff! rest in peace

I too am a former Boulder resident, I can say that Babe and Terry were very wonderful people. As with many of us back in the day, I was allowed to sit up on the stool and have a soda and watch the towns people visit. Terry taught me how to shoot pool, explained the basics of Keno and Babe always made me feel like it was a second home. I have met Pat, and his sister. They have been robbed of more love and family memories than any of of the “friends and co workers of these monsters” could ever justify. They MADE THE CHOICE. They choose to drink, choose to drive to Boulder, choose to stop TWICE, choose to carry a shot gun and choose to kill TWICE!! and what this story is not telling you is they collected less than $100. For the idiot that said Pat is some way “biased” towards men on the game show, go get a life. He is one of the most relaxed, “good ole boys”, non hollywood types you would ever meet.

Kenny Miller was a friend of mine in high school and probably one of the sweetest guys that I can remember from that time period. He was also quite impressionable. Sean was a new friend from work, outside Kenny’s normal circle of friends and he made all of us uneasy. Kenny has always claimed that he did not know Sean’s intentions that night. I don’t know whether this true or not, but I do know that he did not have the personality to committ a cold blooded murder. I’m not saying that he was completely innocent in the crime. He put himself in a bad situation. But he was convicted and he has served his time. Hopefully, prison has not hardened him and he will be able to continue to be a law abiding, hard working member of society. I hope people will allow him to live his life in peace.

I went to school with Sean. He was such a quiet, handsome, sad boy when he was a kid but yes, very angry. His eyes, even back then, were dark and empty. I don’t agree that if he had guidance, etc, he may not have done what he did. I think Sean was born that way no matter WHAT. People are who they are. Period. It was a sad situation to lose such great people the way Sean and Kenny “took them out.” It wasn’t fair….and I really cannot believe that Kenny got away with murder.

I agree, they were both to blame for the actions that took place that day. I have known Sean since he was a very young boy and I do believe that if he had the right guideance as a child then maybe, just maybe he could have taken a different path in his life. He chose to take the life of 2 people but he was not alone in this….The whole system failed Sean as a child…INstead of helping his mom get him the help he needed, they shut doors inher face and turned himaway..But, again, he chose to make the decision to take the life of 2 people. He could have walked away and just let it go. Sean was not good at walking away, I saw that many times when he got mad at his mom…Sad situation he put himself in for sure…I do believe his mom is turning over in her grave everyday because of his actions in life..

I do not remember Kenny, but he was living with my parents at the time of the murders. Over the years, hearing all my family and family friends talk about the insedent and what type of person Kenny was, I could never believe he did this. From the sounds of it. His drunk buddy was calling the shots and doing the shooting. He could not know what his (highly intoxicated) new partner in crime was willing to do or capable of. I hope that people can forgive Kenny for making the poor decision of befriending Sean and being present for the hunting trip. He has done the time decided by a judge and people who are actively involved in his life. And my thoughts n prayers go out to the Duffy family for their tragic loss. For Sean’s family as well, for their loss of a son. To Kenny. I wish you the best and I hope that you thank everyone involved in you being out. And never forget to appreciate what you have. I’m sure you won’t. Stay golden pony boy

WOW! You are willing to sit in judgement of these 2 men..who were just kids when this all happened. What they did was wrong and our criminal justice system did what it needed to do to punish them…I would never want you sitting on a jury for me…if I ever ended up in a court room for a criminal action… Be careful…those glass houses can be broken….Sounds like to me you have some issues you need to deal with as well…Some people are lucky they have a blessed life and never do anything wrong others are not so lucky..guess you are a lucky one…these 2 men know exactly what they did and the system did what they had to do as well..If the parole board saw fit to release Kenny Miller then they must have thought he served his time and he could be a productive citizen out of prison..This is why we have the crimal justice system we have…innocent until proven guilty and given a chance to change for the better even in prison….

I started reading this blog – only because I had wanted more details on Patrick Duffy – since there is a new Dallas show beginning this summer.
I was unaware his parents had died, so …
I found all the comments – very much to the point and passionate.
I’m 56 and a psychologist. Doesn’t matter, except to explain my viewpoint.
Mike’s comments above were the comments I would have made, if I were in my 20’s. I always had said, I would always give people the benefit of the doubt.
I found that as I aged, even in having what I consider, a great life, not rich or anything, I do have, or had developed a more “piss-poor attitude” than I had 30 years ago.
I too have spent much of my life doing for others, much more than I have received in return.
Therefore, I’m often bitter and when I’m in a certain state of mind, my opinion would be that of the gentleman, Doeis.
In fact, word for word.
Because, I have found that regardless of background, you still have to “CHOOSE” to pull the trigger of a gun and I can assure you that everyday there are thousands of people that come to the point of having to “make that decision”, and rarely do (kill someone, that is).
Sometimes in bringing two personalities together, who are opposite in temperament, will contribute to a crime or shooting.
Notice Wentz bragged about having killed 32 people to impress his new, so-called, gentler new friend, .. yet, after the killing.
A murder commited by two or more people is often the result of basic male “pissing distances” more than anything. All you need, in many cases, is the alcohol to numb the senses, to then show “who the man in the group is”.
I can’t tell you from a psychological perspective, how important that is for both males and females.
Ever seen Seinfeld? That show became popular because of constant “gender questioning”. Almost every episode “plays off” of that theme.
Head trauma has recently been found as a contributer to a mean or accelerated temerament, a bit later in life, that might cause people to drink and try to “cause chaos in the lives of others and themselves”..
Social issue problems, being cheated by mom or dad, not being there, as others above had pointed out about Wentz. But they are less of the “impact factors” than previously had been suspected – years ago.
It has been found that drammatic drop, or rise, in temperatures (20 degrees or more) can CONTRIBUTE to being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
You know, creating mood swings – drinking, bad habits, etc..
At least causing you to cuss out your wife or husband, during that time.
But you have the ability – regardless of “how crazy you are or become for awhile”, to get-up from that barstool, or walk away from your spouse, and just because you have been told by the owner of the bar you’re drinking at, to “go home and sleep it off”, .. do just that.
Notice that “Doeis” used no profanity in his writings (though I would check your spelling before sending it off, at least to gain more credibility – if I were you), just the common frustration of abiding by the systems and rules, society has imposed — and maybe a bit tired of those who for a better reason or viewpoint than anything mentioned here, have been able to “get off” from accountability – so often in their past by saying “Hey, I was drunk”, has pissed him off when reading, what I’ve called liberal issues regarding forgiveness, second chances, etc., associated with what are still to be defined as, evil choices.
Your past crimes, if they were evil deeds – even if provoked – will hold you accountable – with the majority of a civilized society, as long as you are on this earth.
Old or new testament – doesn’t matter.
You will be forever judged – by your CHOICES, since we have no way of knowing what choices you’ll make in the future.

This is Sean’s cousin and after reading all the above I can say one very important thing my Aunt Bonnie was an amazing woman, and I am under the impression Sean’s father Mr. Case was a not so nice man who left my Aunt and Sean needs to take blame for what he created in my cousin Sean!!!
