There is so much wrong here I can’t even comphrend it. This man, Stephen Silvey, is the stereotypical child sexual predator. He threatened his victim, threatened to kill her mother, made her believe this was normal, and more. Yes, he did plead guilty, but only because he was caught and he thought he would get leniancy for saying that he now understood this to be wrong (by the way, he has similar charges for abusing another friend’s child in Texas). At sentencing, his lawyer said that it should count for something that he pled guilty and before being charged led a productive life (how did they figure that – was abusing children part of being productive, since this child is not his only victim?). His family said that Silvey was “their rock”.

In a rambling one-hour oratory, Silvey read a more than 50-page statement Friday in which he said he didn’t realize back then that having sex with a child was deviant behavior. He blamed his conduct on depression, his inability to find an adult girlfriend, and certain health and mental dysfunctions. He criticized the young victim, her parents, prosecutors and even his own attorney.

The Judge, however, was not swayed by this. He sentenced him to 57 years in prison.

DuPage Circuit Judge Peter J. Dockery wasn’t swayed. “He is not really remorseful for his crimes at all,” Dockery said. “He is totally oblivious to the harm and pain he caused the victim and instead is completely focused on himself.”

At last, a Judge who gets it! And I sure hope that Texas still prosecutes him. I do not want to see him being able to get out for any reason. At this point, he is 47 years old. He got 57 years. If he were to spend every single day in prison and live, he would be 104 when he got out. I doubt he will live that long, so that is a good sign. But I would like to see it be a sure thing.

But, there is one good thing here. The victim is moving on with her life. She said that he stole her childhood, but he cannot steal her shining future.

**Update**
I received an email from a family member who disputes that the family considered him a rock and all of those good things. They are upset and embarassed over what he did and want nothing to do with this case. They are not at fault here and had nothing to do with this. I apologize to them for any stress I may have caused.
