Amen, Mike! At the end of the day, it does not matter if it is black gang members or white sociopaths, we are all in this together. Instead of pointing fingers, we need to take a hard look at WHY the US is so incredibly violent relative to other industrialized nations. Once we can find some common ground, then the WHAT we are going to do about it will become more apparent. Certainly, we need to make our leaders on every level accountable for violence prevention. Most importantly, we need to do some hard core introspection and find some peace within ourselves. Non violence starts within each individual. We cannot come from a place of anger and do any more than perpetuate all of this absolute bull.

So, if frying people in a chair actually deterred murder, then Texas would be the safest state in the Union. The death penalty would be easier to support if race was not the biggest predictor of who gets it…Not to mention the lengthy expense of the appeals process makes a death sentence more of an expense to the state than life WOP but rehab stats do not look so hot either.

Dr. King had it right. Non violence takes more strength…..is more powerful than any gun. It combines the power of anger with the steel of self control which is galvanized by real HOPE…..Gandhi changed the face of India forever with it… Where have we gone wrong? We have made progress in many ways– When we can all start to take a hard look at ourselves and then work our way out, then maybe Eve and Lauren will have a legacy worthy of the senesless sacrifice of their promising young lives. .

I work in Las Vegas and when the murder happened my sales director came to me and told me that a girl was murdered where i went to school. I moved from auburn just over 8 months ago so i was scared out of my mind that it was someone i knew. I was relieved that it wasn’t but still sad that it was a member of the AU family. Auburn if a small close knit community and when something like that happens it is devastating news to hear. Seeking more info on what happened i stumbled onto this page and unfortunately read some of the mindless dribble posted on this page. Lavonna, I appreciate your candor. Hello everyone.
I am a student at Auburn, and Lauren was a close friend of mine- I was one of the first people notified of her death after the family. And I really feel that you are all slightly missing the point. When I first found out she was missing, I immidately pictured her tied up in the back of some sketchy black van with a man who looks alot like charles manson at the wheel- and we all know he’s neither black nor thuggish. I am from a suburb of a city with lots of crime- we’re actually infamous for our homicide rate. I grew up hearing about atleast one murder pretty much every week. But Mike is right, Auburn is a small, college town and things like this happening here are rare. This is about the fact that someone killed my best friend in the prime of her life and her story. Thankfully they caught him. they WILL punish him. Please don’t focus your energy on the evil man who killed my friend, but please use it to remember Lauren and continue her good work in the world. I see so many times how the killers are remembered, but not the innocent lives they take. Lauren was beautiful and truly a blessing to my life. You could look at her and see she was meant for something greater than this world. As for her killer, I don’t know yet if I want him to get capital punishment or not. I want him to sit in isolation for a long time having what he did to my friend eat away at his soul, if they put him to death, he’ll be out of his misery. The way he will die will be painless when she had to suffer a slow death at his hands. So could you please stop giving that scum bag the pleasure of gaining fame from stealing life? Thank you.

I am a student at Auburn University and was a classmate of Lauren’s, though we were not friends. It’s sickening to see these comments about white vs. black. This horrible thing was not done because Courtney Lockhart was black and Lauren was white. It was a horrible thing done by one person to another person and THAT is what was wrong. also, in response to nicole, this is not a 200 year old issue of a race once being enslaved by another. This has been a constant struggle to right the wrong of that original sin (which we would all be wise to not take too lightly). It has evolved into an issue of civil rights and equality, the principle of which can be applied not only racially but gender wise as well. Furthermore, keep in mind that this quest for civil rights is not a dead fight. MLK Jr. was killed 40 years ago. That is less than half a century. A year ago, the Jenna 6 case made the news; in November we could potentially elect the first black president in our country’s history. We aren’t on the conclusion side of this quest for racial, gender, religious and ethnic equality. We are in the middle of it. I am not saying you need to feel shame for being white. I am a blue eyed blonde haired all american girl through and through. But please do not belittle the work and sacrifice of millions of people in this century and the last who strive to give everyone the same opportunities you have by saying this fight ended 200 years ago with the abolition of slavery. You deserve every opportunity and natural right you have and so does everyone else.

White and Asian Americans have a double whammy in that they have to worry about being the targets of Blacks criminals as well as by their own. Blacks generally only need to be concerned about their own. Each year approximately ten thousand Whites are sexually assaulted by Blacks. IT’s the “elephant in the room” that you can’t pretend not to see. The James Byrd case in Texas was given national coverage whereas few people outside of Kansas or Tennessee heard about the Wichita and Knoxville incidents as is usually the way the MSM operates. When the Black thugs invaded the home in Va and killed an entire young White family; slitting the throats of the small children it was covered due to the brutality of the crime although the racial aspect was played down.
A jury sentenced James Byrd’s killers to death by the way.

I challenge you to name one city or town in the USA where Blacks predominate that aren’t unlivable for civilized people; in fact I challenge you to name even five countries where they predominate that are livable except perhaps Bermuda, where British culture and civilization still exists.

There are so many factors behind motivations for crime and such that it is impossible to use these kinda of statistics to argue whether something is racially motivated or not.

I’m sorry to hear that you find my usage of the word ‘racist’ ignorant. I also fail to see where you are getting the idea of my name calling.

Never once did I say that there wasn’t an overwhelming number in crimes commited by people of colour. I am completely aware of that. What I am saying, though, is that it is ignorant to say that these crimes were commited because these people were of colour. I live in one of the most multicultural cities in the world and I see just as many crimes commited by white people as I do coloured. The driving forces behind the crimes are what really matter. Show me that black men are genetically predisposed to commit crimes, and then we’ll have something to talk about.

Now I’d like you to know that I grew up in a terrible part of Toronto. Yes, I’m Canadian, and that changes nothing. My neighbourhood is notorious for guns, gangs, violence, and death. After living there for only 3 years there had been 5 people murdered on my street alone, and that’s not counting the multiple other murders, drug busts, and robberies that happened on the other streets. There are sirens at all hours of the night, and I, unfortunately, have come to see that as completely normal.

The true meaning of ‘racist’ will never change. It is completely ignorant and incorrect to state that it now describes a person who simply says what others feel. It disgusts me that people will go as far as to make the assumption that everyone else feels the way they do, especially when their thoughts are discriminatory.

I think that you, sir, are the one who needs to educate themselves. Staring at statistics alone will not serve you any purpose. You cannot draw assumptions about a book from its cover, and you cannot judge and entire group of people based on data. Statistics barely touch upon a subject. You must look deeper into something to truly understand its meaning, and unfortunately, the statistics we have today to not reach that deeply.

ALthough I’ve never been to Toronto, only to Quebec many years ago, I would wager that the most terrible part of Toronto cannot compare with most of Philadelphia, Bedford Stuyvesant, (Brooklyn), South Bronx, East Los Angeles, South Central LA, Gary, Detroit, South Chicago, Cleveland, Memphis and ad infinitum.
I never judged an ENTIRE group of people. In my previous post I discussed my colleagues with whom I have worked for two decades and whose weddings and funerals I’ve attended in case you’re tempted to play the “some of my best friends …….” card.
One would have to be blind not to see that there is a terrible problem/pathology in a large part the Black community that cannot be attributed to racism overt or institutional nor can it be attributed to the “legacy of slavery”. And since any open discussion (such as you and I are having right here) in order to “look deeper” into the issue is strictly taboo, we are left with only the “statistics” and those are pretty scary.
If milennia of opression, enslavement and atrocious abuse were an excuse for sociopathy then the most dangerous people on the earth would be Jews.
There is a modern day Black Panther named Shabazz who stands in the courtyard of Philadelphia’s City Hall calling for the killing of White people. Read this link.

A White nut case spouting such hate against Blacks would be immediately arrested if he weren’t killed first. I remember seeing news video of several white supremacist/neo Nazi parades that usually consisted of a handful of costumed marchers with White Power banners and Swastika flags being pelted by rocks and cursed at by hundreds of counter protesters most of whom were White.

Twenty years ago in south Florida there was another group of Black radicals who called themselves the Yawehs (go figure) whose membership ritual consisted of killing Whites and bringing back their ears as proof of compliance. Several people fell victim to these killings as did others in the San Francisco area who were mutilated by machete wielding attackers. These crimes were known as the Zebra killings.
Google the Wichita Massacre and the Kidnapping and murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsome in Knoxville Tennessee. I warn you that the details are quite disturbing.
The successful and influential musician Miles Davis said
“If somebody told me I had only one hour to live, I’d spend it choking a white man. I’d do it nice and slow.”
I believe that it was Benyamin Netanyahu who said that when someone repeatedly proclaims that he wants to kill you, you have to start believing him.
In the last days of the Weimar Republic in Germany the Nazi party was in its infancy and most people including Jews saw people like Rohm and Hitler as buffoonish characters who spouted hateful rhetoric but who would fade away if ignored. The rest is History.
Most White people who support Barack Obama feel that if elected, he will begin a serious discussion of the race problem without the finger pointing and name calling. We can only hope that he does.
On the down side some political strategists such as James Carville and others are already predicting violence if, by some strange turn of events and despite all polls, Mc Cain should win the election.
There are a lot of very frightened people down here in the USA.
Actually I have enjoyed our intellectual sparring match and I do respect your right to your views and I hope we can continue to agree to disagree. And I didn’t mean to imply that you are ignorant. Your writing certainly belies that. I apologize that I let my emotion dictate my better judgement.

The judge addresses him as “Sir”. What an insult to Dogs. He should be eaten by one.

I grew up with a mother who worked part time to help battered homes – at one time women were first beat up bad then risked murder the long they stayed, those were the days in the ‘80. Now with young people we see more violent shootings. Could be due to the first generation growing up with parents that used crack or meth (may have used while pregnant – messes up the brain and could cause violence and perhaps mental slowness and ADD) and also grew up with music the glorifies killings, bad treatment of women, and a media that does not show enough times the punishment involved for crime. When they kill him, they need to get the word out to all. I think his parents should go around and talk to kids after the states kills their son and warn people of doing crime.

A no-good black man who has nothing going for him in this life, kills an innocent sweet white girl who has everything going for her. I am not a racist, but I need to face the truth as does everybody else. Ever since the blacks have moved into my area, there has been nothing but a rise in the crime rate. It isn’t even safe to walk in the park anymore without getting mugged. Funny how every crime that’s occurred and been on the news has been a no good black guy. Blacks always cause the trouble and then bitch about how the “White man is always keeping them down…” It’s not the fu*@ing white man, it’s your own damn selves. I hope the SOB that did this $hit rots in hell for all of eternity. No good M-F…

I really can’t believe their is so much hate in this country about skin color. Being black,white,yellow or red does not make a person bad. People of all colors can be bad or good it’s the individuals that commit crimes that are bad.Danny if you live in bad neighborhood I am sure some of the troubles are also caused by white folks as well.Being white does not make a person sweet and innocent just ask us Native Americans.

All you guys talking about courtney I did not know him but my daughter dated him and I have a grandson from the relationship Murder is not anything good far from it but if you had not been oversea’s in Irac and seeing all the madness and killings you cant judge anyone have you ever been fourced to kill someone to save your life? Yall dont know what that man had to endure over there for our country I know other people that have came back from Irac and commited sucide or have lost there mind my grandson is a blessing from him and I hope he grows up to be a wonderful man.
