This was a tragedy for all involved. For those who can pass judgment so swiftly should try to get facts before voicing your opinion. The man who was taken into custody was not sick nor deranged he to was a father. Imagine if you will someone in your family in a situation they did not choose to be in but perhaps was provoked. I doubt the victim was shot in cold blood. I think in the mits if the struggle and fight the shooter pulled his registered gun and in self defense shot him. Is that so hard to believe. Or is it that we want to make all citizens carrying a gun sound like they are homicidal maniacs. There is always two sided to every story. I am trulu sorry for the victims family. I am also sorry for the shooters family. There is no relief for such tragedy. But we must keep an open mind in order to find the truth.
Nicole,
I don’t understand why you think he was defending himself? this was in the news.
“Police say the shooter is a frequent customer at Sapp Brothers truck stop. Investigators say he started using foul language at the cashiers, then stole a pack of gum. When a security guard started to escort him out of the business, police say the man pulled a gun on the guard and shot him to death.
The security guard was Vern Walter Jenkins, according to police. He was 31 years old. And police say the customer who shot him actually sat down next to him and watched him bleed while waiting for police to arrive.
I wasn’t finished ,I hit enter on accident.
Anyway.. Nicole I do find it hard to believe that he shot in self defense.. He killed a security guard and I hope justice is served and he never gets out and if he does it is to be in the graveyard.. He took a life and he should pay. He should not be packing a gun if he didn’t mean to shoot someone.. My mind is open but I not for him.
Lavonna, Mr Jenkins and Mr Malcolm got into a fight, would you let someone hit you or would you defend yourself? You have to realize the news only shows you what they want you to see. Last time I checked foul language was not a crime. Perhaps the security guard was being a bully. There is always two sided to every story. Why would you try to beat up a 51 year old man over gum. I heard Mr Malcolm was trying to leave after the argument with the clerk and the security guard followed him and provoked him. They are both victims and it is ther familys that suffer now.
From all of the news accounts that I have read and seen on TV, Roger Malcolm made a scene (as he did often there, he was known at the truck stop and not liked at all). Verne was doing his job by trying to escort him out when Roger pulled the gun and shot Verne. He then sat down by the body and watched him die. Verne did not provoke him or try to beat him up. This is not his fault, and please do not appear to make it so or that he deserved what he wanted. He is the victim here, not Roger.
Omgoodness, I thought Vern was the deranged looking shooter.. My apologies.. I should have wrote “Roger was mad because he was being escorted” not Vern.
Vern’s families, I am so sorry I got the names mixed up. Please forgive my not paying attention to putting the wrong name.. I read the story but I goofed up..
I was a friend of vern’s and I’m so sad that any one could hurt him he was sweet and kind in the years that I knew him I never once saw him mad or unkind to anyone….Only god knows and can judge the man for what he did ……My heart goes out to Kallen and stephanie……….R.I.P Verne

1 - I will not tolerate hate filled speech or derogatory remarks about a victim. I will remove comments that go against this. I will not remove comments just because they do not match my beliefs, in fact, I welcome them! However, that being said, I will remove those that I find offensive, argumentative just for the sake of starting an argument that does not add to the post, hate-filled speech, etc.
