Today was the day. Today in a Florida courtroom, Circuit Judge Ric Howard handed down the most appropriate sentence for child killer John Evander Couey. Of course, we all knew that was what the Judge would do, since the jury recommended it and Judges rarely go against what they recommend. And if John Couey does not deserve the death penalty, who does? He kidnapped Jessica from her own home, then sexually assaulted her. He then told her he would take her home, but then bound her and put her in garbage bags and buried her in a yard close to her own home. She was found 3 weeks later, after suffocating to death. I cannot imagine what that poor girl was thinking or feeling. Or how her father felt after finding out that she was so close to him while slowly dying. And then Couey had the nerve to say he would apologize to Jessica in heaven. WHAT??? I am sorry, but he is NOT going to heaven. He has murdered an innocent child. I hope he suffers for the rest of his sad sorry life and after. He does not deserve even one moment of happiness again. Ever.
Mark Lunsford, I admire you for your strength throughout this ordeal. You never sank to his level, but kept a calm, cool head. I can never understand how you feel or what you have gone through, and I wish you never had to go through this. But you are an inspiration to me and to my family. I wish you only happiness and good luck from here on out.

Ok let’s look at the real issue here! Sure he deserves to be removed from society, even die. However what is with the HORRIBLE fact that the press caused this sick man to panic and kill the child? Where were the experts to guide the search and make sure every possible method was used to return the girl home safely. It is psychology 101 not to corner an individual like that.
What about the fact that there is a real disease in our society of men that are sexually dysfunctional with an attraction to children even babies? What are we doing about it? Where can these people go to get help before it escalates into abduction and murder? Alcoholics can go to AA, drug addicts to NA, where is Sexual Dysfunction Anonyms?
I happen to know a man with this disease (molesting a baby and presently in prison for 15+ years), and I also happen to know he reached out for help when he realized his dark thoughts. You can’t imagine the negligence in which his cry for help was treated.
Are our children not worth some investigation on how to treat, medicate, castrate, and institutionalize these sick individuals before they molest or kill children? PEOPLE WAKE UP THEY ARE OUT THERE AND OUR SHAME TO ADDRESSES THE ISSUE IS NOT HELPING.
Are we so ashamed and ignorant that we believe this disease will go away? Have you read history; do you realize how prevalent and how long this problem has existed in OUR CULTURE.
Some kind of “outreach” program with professional help should be available to these individuals to nip potential disastrous results at the bud. Lock them up together, study them, and find out what can be done. ANYTHING pro active.

The worst crime I’ve read about in a long while. Not wishing to take anything away from the poor girl or her families suffering, I’d rather this man was put in prison for life rather then killed. Heres why; this is a high profile case, other inmates don’t take too kindly to men who’ve committed monstrosities against children, no matter what they themselves are in for. Him having to wake up every morning fearing for his life, not knowing if someone was going to capture and torture him, in my opinion would be a much more just ending. To kill him gives him a peaceful death which he doesn’t deserve. Hell, I’d even commit a minor crime to get inside and do him myself.

Just think about it, really think about it. How can you just be agree with someones death penalty? I mean i’m not even feeling what her parents felt when they noticed their child was murdered. but i mean, how can a human being wish another human being dead? An eye for an eye! Killing him won’t bring Jessica back and won’t make her family feel better about the situation. But it does provide some closure. Can you honestly say if someone killed your entire family, you wouldn’t then want to go out and kill that person? It is human nature to want the person who hurt someone you love to be hurt as well. I know if someone I loved and cherished was murdered, I would never rest until I knew for a fact that person was gone forever and there was no possible way he/she could hurt someone else. What do you suppose they do with him?

Yes, some of these people are honestly sick, but is society supposed to cater to them? Unfornately Gwendolyn, alot of these people KNOW right from wrong, they just don’t give a shit. They have sick fetishes, and don’t want help. What makes someone kill? We can spend millions and millions of dollars to TRY and get an answer to that question. Bottom line is, most people kill because thay WANT to. When was the last time you heard of a murderer volenteering to “get help”? I have that answer for you. Not till AFTER their caught. very well said. i agree there’s more to be done in terms of preventing sickened people from committing terrible acts. but, like you said, anyone who seeks help usually does so after they are caught. the no name writer- i agree, too. christians being blood thirsty is quite hypocritical. but, with the severity of the case against this 9 year old girl, it’s difficult for anyone- religious or not- to not want vengeance.
i would have liked to see him get life in prison, too. i would personally rather receive death than life in a box. but, he’s not that young so how much longer will he be alive for anyway? i would like to see what inmates would do to him, though. could still happen.
and his case- under florida law- will automatically be appealed so who knows.
bottomline, the guy did a horrible thing. he’s got to live with himself.

I read on Wikipedea how he killed this girl Jessica Lunsford.
He put her in raped her for 3 days, then put her in 2 garbage bags and buried her alive.

If you turn on your television, I venture to say you will find on Every channel, Crime of all sorts, murder, rape, child abduction, incest, homosexuality, even the advertisements push sex to the limit. Then their are the Violent Video Games, sex and violence in news papers, magazines, and then The Internet….

Just because I would WANT to kill someone for killing my daughter doesn’t mean it is the RIGHT or JUST thing to do. It wouldn’t bring my daughter back or change anything…it would actually make me a KILLER! right?
Before you all attack me as you have Gwendolyn, you should know that I have mixed fillings about this myself and may be thinking out loud here. If it were in my hands (literally, if I were there and the killer were in my hands) I would probably do everything in my power to kill the s.o.b. BUT to think that he is brought to trial, where everything is throughly reviewed, people are given plenty of time to think about what they are doing….and they choose to “play God” and end his life!?
Besides, why does he get to “rest in peace” when I (assuming this were my daughter) have to live in pain and horror! I will NEVER be the same, I will NEVER forget, I will NEVER feel better about it. I will have to move on. let him suffer by letting him live through his actions. let him rot in jail while he thinks about all of life’s possibilities WHICH HE WILL NEVER HAVE if he’s sentenced to life in prison but he will have the agony of having to think about it….
I’m not reluctant to let out my anger (and there is no hiding that capitol punishment is an act of anger/vengeance…especially based on the posts here!) BUT I’d pray (and vote!) that the law would prevent me from letting my anger turn me in to a murderer….no matter how “justifiable” I may think it is!

Execution used to be done by hanging or shooting…slowly became lethal injection (in some parts of the world)….people are becoming more “humane” about killing!? (did you know they clean the injection area before the execution!?!?) Maybe this trend will result in the eventual ban on the death penalty….we should only hope!

I also want to send my regrets to Jessica’s family and I truly apologize if I offended any of them. NOTHING can justify the cruel death of this little girl and unfortunately, there are many others who have been kidnapped too. I pray they are all brought to safety before something tragic like this takes place….

No one can stop a molester, rapist, or murderer of children. It’s what they do, given the opportunity. But once caught…
