Stephen Grant had his first day in court today. He did not speak much, but answered the judge’s questions politely. And, of course, he was denied bail (big suprise, huh?)
“Mr. Grant, I don’t think I need to hear anything further with regard to the issue of bond,” the judge said. “Given the extreme, extreme seriousness of the charges, the nature of the allegations here, the nature of the alleged flight, the court agrees with the people. I’m going to order you held without bond. Do you understand that?”
This afternoon there is a hearing regarding custody of the two Grant children.
A child custody hearing for the Grant children was scheduled for later Tuesday afternoon. (Macomb County Prosecutor Eric) Smith said his office planned to petition the family court to take jurisdiction of the children and terminate Stephen Grant’s parental rights. Smith said the Michigan Department of Human Services recommends that the children live with Tara Grant’s sister, Alicia Standerfer, and her husband at their home in Chillicothe, Ohio.Stephen Grant’s sister, Kelly Utykanski, of Sterling Heights, and her husband also were seeking temporary custody of the children. DHS spokeswoman Maureen Sorbet declined to comment on parental rights in the Grant case, but said a court hearing on the issue was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
